Does anyone know what model speed/cadence sensor is used by a lot of the pro teams -it's the little yellow box seen here on Berties Trek:

Is it a custom jobbie, or are they available (they seem to be on a lot of teams bikes)

I thought that was the timing chip. Seem to remember a bit of drama a few years back when one had to be reattached on the move.

For a second there I thought it was attached to the spoke. I was wondering how they attached it on the move.

    yea its a timing chip

censor on the finish line allows them to have another measure of riders finishing position.

also if you log onto www.letour.fr it allows you to see whose in what group on the road in the live updates as a tour stage is happening

Well, that explains why everyone has one!

And there was me thinking it was a very tidy looking sensor :)

Strange place for a timing chip, you generally want that on the fork, for obvious reasons.

How come? I know diddly-squat about timing chips.

They've had em there for the tours for the last few years.
For the TOI we had ours on the hub of the front fork/wheel. Was yours the same?

Well the fork crosses the line before the back of the bike!

We didn't have timing chips in the TOI this year, they operated a manual card system. Haven't got anything back regarding time or the DVD etc though.

Had an ankle timing chip for the Marmotte, in these events though the time is personal, taken from when you cross the line to when you finish- not the case for a mass start road race where it is first tyre over the line irrespective of start position.

makes sense. What do they do about bike changes? Is this the only way they determine rider position?

We didn't get our DVD till over 6 months later.

It doesn't really matter if the chip is in the same location for everyone.

I actually though it was part of the radio unit. I remember seeing one of them on someones helmet in the Tour, and Sean Kelly commented that it was very unusual to have it there as most were on the chainstays.

I'd agree with Blorg about it being a very strange position for a timing chip. The guy who had it on his helmet could be 'nths of a second faster if he leaned forward enough.

erm... just to contradict myself....nope its a timing chip alright :

Doesn't explain why some of the Garmin guys had a yellow box on their helmets, is the radio unit virtually identical ?

The garmin box is the radio unit which would otherwise be attached to the body somewhere under the jersey

I'm disappointed in me too Tunney.... I'm sorry :(

I don't think the position matters all that much, as the peloton is all given the same time etc, and photo finishes are used for sprints
