I'm in the market for a hard drive.

    I want 1TB.
I want it to be flat (as opposed to standing).
I want it to be powered by Usb (just not with a plug)

I don't mind buying a bare drive and an enclosure separately.

People have been recommending Western Digital and Seagate so far. Help me out, give me some choices.

I honestly dont know much about external drives as Ive never bought one, but I have heard Seagate and Western Digital are among the best out there.

There are plenty of 1TB externals, however, afaik they all require an external power supply. USB ports can't deliver enough power to run a 3.5" HDD. So if you want a USB powered drive you are limited to 2.5" laptop drives and they get no bigger than 500GB at the moment.

    WD Passport
    Seagate GO

That's not going to happen. 3.5" HD requires both 5V and 12V power. To get the 12V the hard drive would need to be connected to the Firewire port. The solution you are looking for would most likely require the drive to be connected to two USB ports and the Firewire port which is insane.

Yeah ok, looking at a WD at the moment. Going to have to opt for the 3.5 so I'll need the AC adapter.
