Very nice. Any interesting story to go with it?

Bought in Ireland and exported to England, then the guy I bought it off saw it on the back of a trailer and wanted to buy it,no luck but gave his number to owner anyway.Few years later he got a phone call about the car and finally purchased it.Brought it back to Co.Tyrone and kept it until I decided I wanted it.It was off the road 10 years but I was certain it would make it from Tyrone to Carlow.Went perfect but ran out of petrol, which was fairly embarrassing as everybody pointed and laughed as they sped past us:o
Right,In fairness it wasn't interesting but its still a story:p

I remember years ago when i bought a 1972 Kadett B, 1.2 automatic. I had to sell it cos i just couldn't keep it on the road. I was living in the centre of Brussels at the time and there's a lot of cobble stones there...

The RWD Kadett was a nightmare on wet cobble stones :-)

It was repainted last month because rust on the bottom of a wing, tried to just paint that but the rest was a bit faded so had to do it all.

I would have thought If the car was originally bought in Ireland then it should still possible to get its original reg no. too.

I think it was bought from a dealer here just to be exported to a customer in England and first reg'd there.

Maybe it was because the customer wanted an opel and as they only sell vauxhall in england, thats the way he went about it?

Afaik all model Opels were sold in the UK up to the the early 80s until the introduction of the FWD Astra and Cavalier, some FWD Kadetts were sold in the UK in 1980/81 and from then only the Manta and Monza were sold as Opels over there until the Vauxhall Calibra replaced the Manta

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 JB.

.........Opels were available but due to import taxes were dearer than their Vauxhall equivalents. They were for sale, available, but special order only !

Vauxhalls were sold in Ireland alongside Opels unitil late 81 when it became Opel only, though stock lingered for about 12 months !

Luton built cars were actually obvioulsy inferior from about 10 feet away, even up to the time the Vectra "A"'s were made. The first batch of Vectras for Ireland were made in Luton, to satisfy RHD demand..............and the dealers literally had to remake them at PDI time. These cars were identifyable by the "V" in their chassis number.......87LV was a Vauxhall........87L was a German car !

    79kadett.jpg

    Bit off topic, but

Brings back memories of a green opel kadett b estate (previous model to this one) that we used to have, and if this pipe was off, the cabin would fill with fumes:eek:.The underneath of her was rotten, and the rear lights were also rusty and good ones could not be found then.Nice driver though.Oh and no radio:confused:.Ah those were the days:(.

My father had one of those Kadett estates when I was a kid. Never liked the look of it...still dont.

On the other hand... I always liked the Kadett C's ....especially the Coupe's.

That red C saloon is a little gem of a car!:)

Yeah , that is a lovely car, have a soft spot for them as my first new car was a 79 kadett. Always fancied getting one again, the sport and olympia were particularily nice. Ultra reliable and good bodywork too :D

Snap! My first car was a '79 Kadett City Hatch - Rear wheel drive, nice handling and took me all over the Country without ever complaining or breaking down.

    - Seat belts were fixed basically & no head-rests but luckily never needed them!!!
