Connect to computer through router

I am trying to connect from my laptop on wifi to my desktop which is wired to my Sitecom router. I have tried to access it by running the local IP address the router assigned but it asks for username and password which there are none on either system, only the router and that does not work for it. I cannot access either computer from the other, it gives some other error message sometimes too. Both computers can access internet fine and file sharing is turned on with both. Also I cannot connect to the printer on the same computer, drivers are installed but I cannot detect it, and then when I put in the computer name and address it says the print spooler service is not started. It is running on the desktop and so are the programs it depends on. Have tried restarting it. It is also running on the laptop but depends on a service called HTTP which is not listed so this may be the problem.

If you have vista on the notebook and desktop you need to create a user account to be able to access them

No the laptop has Vista home premium and XP media centre on the desktop, I can't even get as far as where it was asking for the password now!
