Impact on Jupiter confirmed

Last night austrailian amateur astronomer Anthony 'Bird' Wesley
posted on astronomy boards that he thought he had captured the scar
from an impact of most likely and asteroid or comet on Jupiter.
Today his discovery was confirmed by JPL.

Bird was good enough to give us Irish astronomers a heads up last night
to try and catch it..

I imaged it's transit along with the transit of the moon 'Io'
between 1.27 - 3.04 am which is when clouds rolled in.
Here is a single shot showing the moon crossing the limb and casting
it's shadow onto the Planet.
The impact scar is the dark area to the top
(in reality the South) of the planet.

This is a rare event to image and witness so if you have a capable scope
take a look at this as it will not be long before the scar is engulfed by the
clouds and rotation of this gas giant.

My scope isn't anywhere powerful enough, thanks for the info though.

Simply because the image is upside-down, basically (most telescopes form images upside-down, and when you're taking a photo with them you don't really bother to invert it as you would when you're using it for gazing with your eye).

Far, far, far too far for my meer 10x50 bino's. Also the sky is overcast (again)

It's nice to know Jupiter is doing it's job as the Solar Systems 'Hoover'
Deep Impact was a good film but I wouldn't want to see the live performance.

what type of telescope do you have ? and the picture ?

have you got a feed into your PC ?

im just curious because i'm an armchair astronomer but would like
to break in and get my 1st telescope soon !!!

Hubble was re-directed to point towards jupiter yesterday,they're expecting images late today or tomorrow.
