Yeah you read the thread title right. The Italian city is finally getting around to banning teenagers from drinking.

The previous law banned alcohol sales to under 16's but was rarely enforced because of old traditions where children would be given a spoonful of wine as a treat at family occasions and alcohol consumption laws and attitudes were fairly relaxed.

Now heavy fines will be imposed on the parents of offending children and on shopkeepers or bar owners who serve them.

A third of 11-year-olds in the city have alcohol related problems.

It begs the question. Some people advocate reducing the legal drinking age to 16 here. Others prefer the status quo or indeed to raise it to 21 like America. In Milan it seems tolerance of younger age groups drinking has had a bad effect. I don't think even here in Ireland a third of 11-year-olds have alcohol related problems.

    After Hours... Do your thing.

They're enforcing an existing law? That's the kind of radical thinking we need in this country.

    no, no, no, no, no.
What we need to do is draft a new law that completely overreacts to the problem.

    THAT'S the irish way!

The pregnant, alcoholic, 11 year old priests are the worstest.

Yup just waiting for the OTT ban all alcohol from the country for the Save Our Children groups.....

The solution is with the parents. If young teenagers are boozing, there are signs and the mammy and daddy should be able to deal with it.

If you want to use a country as a yardstick for law and order I suggest you stay well clear of the Italians.

And Ireland does have one of the highest percentage of teen pregnancies but we're behind just Iceland(and Poland) which is not bad company.
