I'm just wondering what the procedure is for changing the tax on a jeep from private to commercial?? Obviously i would need to remove the rear seats, do i need to remove the back windows?? do i need to do anything to the boot area?? also how do i prove that i need it commercially, will they check out my profession etc??

An then i assume get it checked at my local motor tax office??

    Thanks

The rear seat belt have to be removed and the seat belt harnesses have to be welded shut. You will also have to get the vehicle weighed at an authorised weighbridge afaik.

Best thing to do is ring your local motor tax office who will have the specifics.

Ask over in the 4x4forum - the lads over there have all the answers for this.

Slightly unrelated question... Is there any reason you can't make an estate car commercial, ie in M5 estate or the like?

i did my conversion on my hilux surf all i had to do was to

    1. remove rear seats
    2. remove rear seatbelts.
    3. plug up all bolt holes for the seats and seatbelts with a metal putty no need to weld the up.
    4. get the jeep weighted with a printed weight docket
    5. a form from the doe test centre that needs to be signed by the garda

and thats it nothing to be done to the windows or floor pan.

when the above was done i had to go over to my tax office(nass) the teaster came out checked over the work done and she was happy.
she sent off the form and now all im waiting on is the doe which is up friday

i went into the doe centre and asked the tester do i need to do anything else he said everything was grand.

now just to pass the doe test. when its passed the form i will get i have to bring that over to the tax office and then i can tax the jeep.

    check out the thread.

    @NewApproach
i asked about that and the tester say yes it can be done just ask your local tax office what they want done to the car.
its a lot easier to convert a car/jeep that has already been registered in Ireland.

If its a "Jeep" as in Chrysler motor, I'd offload it asap.

An absolute nightmare when they need parts. Private importation of parts from the US is common.

I once changed over a jap import pajero, just removed the seats, doe'd it and sent the paperwork thru' - all done no hassles. It was years ago all the same.

    Thanks Stephen, a great response

I am trying to sell a jeep at the moment and i'm thinking it might be easier if i change it to commercial, lower tax and it will have just done a DOE so a years driving without a test

do you have to take seats out. I starting up my own business and have a freelander classed as private car at the moment but will be using it to carry supplies but as I'm also a mother so need the seats when not working for ferrying kids to school ect seems crazy to have to buy a second car to use for work and leave my own jeep in the drive and pay two insurance's and two sets of tax starting a business is hard enough without wasting extra money on another vehicle
