    Hi all,

I was a contractor. On 1st April this year my contract expired.
I applied for social welfare, they told me:

    - I do not qualify for jobseekers benefit , because I was self-employed.
    - I do not qualify for Jobseekers allowance, because I earned over the threshold this year 13K

I have had no income in the last few months and I have no money in the bank. None of this seems to make any difference to social welfare.

Is there anything I can claim???

you are in the same position as the majority of the construction workforce in this country.

    - self employed means you are not entitled to same as PAYE workers....surely you knew this when you decided to become self-employed.

I assume you were on a decent wage before your contract expired ? have you discussed the possibility of doing the same contract on less money, have you talked to your accountant - surely he/she would have advised you to set up a pension fund and/or a rainy day fund.

actually I suppose 13k/52 weeks is 250 pw so that does put you over the means for JSA.

Its an absolute mystery to me too. First I ever heard of a "threshold".

Yes- but it doesnt work that way. If I earn £300 in week A, I dont get any JSA that week. If I get £1000 the next week, I dont get any JSA. But in those 2 weeks, I have one-tenth of the "threshold" accounted for, but only 2/52nds of the year accounted for.

So he could easily work to the tune of £13000 and still be eligible for payments at any given time,no?
