As I have mentioned on a previous thread, I am trying to convert a pre 60ies T2 to 12 volt preferably with an alternator rather than dynamo.

It is ending out to be a lot more hassle than I thought. The dynamo mount is pre 60ies and won't take the alternator mounting brackets offered with any of the Machine 7 kits. http://www.machine7.com/section.php?xSec=186

The alternative would be to change the block to a later 1200cc engine or bigger. The current ring gear is 180mm as opposed to 200mm so I would have to open out the bell housing if I was to fit the later 12 volt engine.

If I was to change blocks and use the alternator kit I wouldn't need a regulator. I will need some other components such as a 12volt choke possibly starter, wiper motor, 200mm ring gear if I get a post 67 block.

Why would you not keep it original 6V? I drove a Bug with that conversion 13 years ago, but then my next one was original 6V and it was OK. You just need to make sure that the regulator produces proper voltage in the system.

You need to get a porsche 12v dynamo.
It would be a sin to take the 30hp engine out of it

The Bosch 12v porsch dynamo is over e400 and that dose not include condensor and regulator.

My sound system is 2000w RMS, a Dynamo wouldn't even light up the head unit, I also like to see where I am going at night. :D

I drove both Alternator and Dynamo busses across the states, I had more hassle with dynamos, IE lights fading, batteries going flat etc, The 75Amp alternator is a far better job for running a camper particularly if you are using an extra deep cycle battery.

If I replace the engine I will hang on to the original one as it matches the chassis number.
