You need to find a Garage that will take you on as an apprentice and complete your 4 years on and off the job training with FAS. All proper garage's can do it but you need to find one that is willing. Try asking in the FAS centre's as they may know of some garage's that are looking for an apprentice mechanic.

Did you ever get a solution to this?
I'd like to do some basic training in car mechanics, same boat as yourself working not in the sector and would like to do some night course or something.

The procedure to become a mechanic in Ireland is through a FAS apprenticeship.

YOU get a garage to accept you as a trainee mechanic and they register you with FAS as such. (you can also contact FAS to see it they have any garage's currently looking for people as trainee's)

    you then complete
Phase 1:- 6~12 months on the job training
Phase 2:- 6 months college training
Phase 3:- ~6 months on the job training
Phase 4:- 3 months college training
Phase 5:- ~6 months on the job training
Phase 6:- 3 months college training
Phase 7:- ~6 months on the job training

you are then certified with a national craft certificate at L6 in motor mechanic's. (providing you passed all you exam's of course)

Kind of yes. you would have to do it full time as a trainee, BUT you are paid for it and also have no college fee's. The garage pay you a wage when you are working on the job and FAS pay you while you are on the college training, also as you are normally in college for a good few months of each year you get to claim back the tax which you paid during your on the job pahse's which nearly means you don't really pay much tax at all during the whole apprenticeship. :)

Not sure about whcih other college's but the IT in Carlow do an evening introduction course.

There are part time course's you can do in Motor car maintenance. I think they are normally 10 week course's, 1~2 evenings per week.
these are not in anyway going to certify you to become a mechanic as these are purely meant for people who have an interest in basic maintenance of their own vehicle i.e general overview, servicing and light maintenance etc.
