My laptop is a Compaq Presario CQ50 and when i plug it in it says "Plugged In, Not Charging". Sometimes its like this for hours and it will eventually charge.

Anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

If it can detect that it is grounded ie plugged in but not charging then it kinda sounds like a knackered battery. Time to get a replacement battery maybe?

This problem is logged all over the web - thousands and thousands of people. I have the same issue, I replaced my battery but that was just a waste of money.

Vista is being blamed but I don't understand that, when my PC was turned off it used to charge the battery but doesn't any longer, when it's turned off the OS is not engaged, so I don't know how it can be Vista, but that's what people are guessing on the internet.

I've tried everything, no solution, it's driving me crazy. I think it's amazing that these hardware and software manufacturers can have so much product on the market with a known serious fault and they are not offering any solution.

Heyy. I have the exact same problem, I got mine about 9 months ago (boxing day, '08) and its started today... :S. But about 1 month ago, it wouldn't start at all, and it turned out it was running on a 90 watt power cable instead of a 65... that may be your problem, have you reasearched it? thats what I'm doing now. I hope mine does charge soon though.

I know it’s late, but theses answer are clueless.
First of all, the reason it’s plugged, but not charging because it’s too hot; let me explain.
Have you noticed where the battery is? yes?
Then, have you noticed where the vents of the cpu are? yes?
The reason it’s not charging is because the laptop is already hot (which can happen at normal operating temps), so to prevent an overheat (which will make it shutdown), it’s not charging. Charging a battery produces heat, heat that’s close to the already hot cpu.
I think you should all know where i’m going to with this and i can’t believe HP/Compaq helpsperson do not know about that safety feature.

So to charge it, you either
    - Shut it down and let it cool down
    - Find a way to cool it.

Thats not a Safety feature. And this is the reason why the Service Desk did not say it to the user, because youve made it up.

If this was true then the laptop would not charge directly after being turned off.

It could possibly be Vista, Vista can control charging etc on motherboards that have this facility.
