Heading out there next week for a holiday. Would ideally like to hire a road bike out there to do a few miles on two of the daya rather bring my own.

Does anybody know a good hire shop in the area?

Also, if anybody has any experience of cycle routes in the area then please post too...

Head out of Sorrento and head towards Positano. Amazing, beautiful and one of the best coastal routes in the world.

Return journey is around 25km If I remember correctly.

I would say this though. I think anybody would be mad to cycle on those roads. It is insane in the part of the country.

I dont know where you would hire a bike. Sorry.

The Giro went down there so you retrace the route they used to Vesuvius (can't spell that). There was several guys out there cycling when I was there but they were out early in the morning.

As berty said I really wouldn't bike there at the roads are totally bonkers. There's no bike shops around that way either, I tried to find some but the Italiians didn't know of any.......... at least they couldn't understand, "Where's da BIKI shop bro?"

I've got some insider knowledge on restaurants which I'll post in a momento.......

    Just to confirm..

Is it the car drivers that make this a bad place to cycle or it is the quality of the roads.

    I'm guessing it's a combination of both.. :)

+1 and then some. I personally wouldn't want to be spending my leisure time cycling on that road, the attitude of the local drivers is woeful and I just can't see how it'd be enjoyable as opposed to stressful, beautiful and all as the scenery is.

That said, I know a guy who, upon hearing that the Amalfi coast was one of the worst places in Europe to drive, went out of his way to hire a car so he could drive it, so if you'e of that mindset, fire ahead.

IIRC the climb up Vesuvius is not too bad in terms of traffic... As to cycling there, around Naples they drive in an interesting way and everyone's car has dents in it but there seems to be some sort method to it, I would not say they are bad drivers, just assertive. I'd say give it a go, maybe wear a helmet :)

I have read in more than one place that while Italians drive like crazy people they actually look out for and have a great respect for cyclists... this was certainly the case in Sardinia, I could not get over how much room we were given and how carefully everyone passed, much better than drivers here in Ireland.
