Landed job in London - advice needed

after 5 months on the dole, I finally found work :D

I have yet to negotiate the salary, so hoping someone can help me out here.

the ad said they "normally" appoint at the low end of the scale, which is £26,580 (sterling, bear in mind)

I'm just wondering what this equates to in euro, when you take exchange rate AND cost of living into account. I think the latter is much more important in this case

the high end of the salary is £30,360... with my experience I'm hoping to negotiate half way up the scale

hoping there are economist/financial types on here to advise. thanks in advance

Have you been offered the job or are you in the final interview phase?

You should check with them if you are entitled to London Weighting allowance. Most is not all keyworkers in London get this extra allowance, i.e. school teachers, civil servants, Police, Fire Service etc.

London is more expensive than Dublin but more opportunities I would imagine compared to the lack of jobs here in Dublin , have you any relations who could put you up for a while until you find your feet?

Best of luck with it anyway, you should take it

formal conditional offer already made... just waiting for occupational health form. once that's filled out and they're happy the job is mine. still room for negotiation though.

I've lived in the UK before and based on recent trips over it would seem food and drink are cheaper... I already have accommodation sorted as a friend owns a flat there, just waiting until I have a start date

it's with one of the universities and pretty sure I get the london allowance and possibly a central london allowance on top. I'll find all of this out this week

I reckon £26,580 in London would go roughly as far as about 32 or 33,000euro in Dublin. That's slightly more than the exchange rate alone would suggest because London is actually noticably cheaper than Dublin right now, although it depends on what you spend your money on. Shopping and going out will cost less (especially the alcohol :) ) but then you've got council tax to make up for it. Also, I think benefits tend to be more generous in London than here although average salaries are lower (about £24k vs 35keuro, but that might be a bit out of date now) so you'll want to consider the value of the whole package, not just the salary.I worked in London until last year, then worked a year in Dublin with a few trips back to London, so I don't think my estimate will be too far off.
