If I buy say a car from Cork with a C reg, can you get the reg changed to a D for Dublin?

Simple answer is no once the car is regestered. But my when my mam bought a brand new car from a garage in Wexford they registered the car as a C reg as she came down from Cork to buy it?

what's the craic if you register the car in the UK, then bring it back to a Dublin address?

    A) you get a new number with the county you live in?

    B) you get the old number back?

in both cases you don't pay VRT as the car was already reg'd in Ireland

Cheers yeah i did not think so but a mate wants a different reg for some reason but so asked me to find out.

Reg snobbery aids car sales in this country - so I doubt they will change it any time soon

They should get rid of the county from registration plates altogether. Replace it with a number randomly assigned.

Reg snobbery is what makes cars affordable for people who can see past a number on a piece of plastic. I'm all for it.

Yeah or Just give us all D regs :D that way we can cod the silly Dubs by selling them country cars, with hay in the boot and muck on the mudflaps.

we have one of the most logical number plate systems in the world, but you still get people calling for it to be scrapped

If we didn't also have a country full of some of the most ignorant idiots around then the reg plates could stay the same.

Instead we have a country full of people who want the latest year and only the latest year and as for the those who will only drive D regs.. Don't get me started.

surely that can only be a good thing for those who know better?

How does this affect you adversely?

When i'm selling a car it's all I hear. With the first car it was all about the reg not being a D. With this car it's all about it "being a 97".

It's a bloody stupid mentality and yeah, it might support new car sales for certain people but for everyone else it makes it near impossible to get rid of your car.
*and yes, someone did refuse to buy my car before because it was a waterford reg*

What <snip> difference does it make whats on the reg.

But it makes your car cheaper to buy secondhand in the first place.

Yeah and makes it impossible to get rid of too.

I have an LH reg living in Limerick-ish area. I can always use my LH reg as an excuse to go

"oopps sorry I drove down that lane and skipped traffic, sure Im from outside town". :D

C will make no difference in Dublin but for some reason Dubs do not like any reg which is not attached to Dublin like KE, MH, LH, WW.

I had a KY reg and people in Dublin used to look at me and my car like I was from Timbuctoo.(sp)

Yet, when I had my MN reg the people in Dingle used to look at the car funny. One guy even asked me if it was a northern reg?

So if it was the other way around, you'd be paying more for a second hand car, but not losing as much when you sell it second hand. I imagine that the net loss will be higher that way.

What? No it doesnt. We have never had a D-reg and we have never had to take less than the going price for a car. Maybe the odd idiot will say no but judging by people i know, its definitely in the minority.
