Looking for an inexpensive way of making backups of my movies and storing them somewhere safe, just in case one gets damaged. Any advice would be appreciated.

Buy a hard disk. Maybe 1TB Western Digital (about €100 on Amazon uk)
    - download MacTheRipper and rip all your movies onto the drive...
    - If you want to shrink the file sizes down, use Handbrake to rip the DVDs (about 800 mb each)
    - after your done, store the hard disk in another household so your backups will be safe even if the originals go walkabout!
