Hi all,

Our singer got 2 SM58s of ebay a few months ago. came in proper shour boxes and the proper shure "pencil cases":D However I only noticed a few weeks ago that their weight is very different to the sm57s and 58 beta we use, they are a LOT lighter, id say 50% less. Also, they came with the on/off switch, which is unusable, as when they are turned on or off, there is a massive crack out of them.

Ive herd that internaly the sm57s and 58s are the same, so the difference in weight is making me think they are fake. is there any way to check if they are real?

Hmm if it seems a bit light it could be a fake one, the real ones are about 300 grams,(some real ones do come with a switch btw - the SM58s) see if you can get another to compare how it sounds, if it doesn't sound as good its probably a dud... Or else you could try dropping it, if it doesn't break its real:pac:

    yep - fakes - 100% ****E .

here is a flickr site i set up to prove it .

i got done with one before by some c.unt on ebay .

if you paid by paypal - open a complaint ASAP- but do not close the complaint until you have your money back.

in my case the scamming f.uck didnt send the mic ,so i complained to pay pal
got the mic , and closed the complaint .

then realised it was a fake , tried to claim back - no joy , the evil pay pal c.unts only allow one complaint per purchase.

shure didnt give a fcuk , and nore did the crdit card company who said its pay pals issue - ( I MOVED CARDS AFTER THIS )

Though they are microphones...so if they sound great it doesn't matter...
If they sound crap - it does!!

only way to get some money back is to

1/ mail the mics to shure with return postage ( contact them first ) and ask them for a letter confirming they are fakes ,

2/ send the mics back to the seller with recorded delivery

3/ send proof of return and the letter from shure to your cridt card company

but to be honest to will only cost you more

Or just buy from authorised dealers. There are plenty selling on Ebay as well as the scammers. If it looks like it is a too good to be true price then it probably is.

well, yes, which is why shure consider you an idiot when you ask them about fakes .

ebay is a fcuking nightmare for fakes these days .

John Leckie has a q and a thing going on Gearslutz at the moment. He was asked about what he uses to get a good distorted guitar sound; A U67 and a SM58. He could use anything else with the 67 but chooses an SM58. A quick check of his discography reveals that he has indeed gotten many the tasty guitar tone down to tape.

Also seeing as the 58 is essentially the same as the 57 (different capsule grille used) consider the number of classic recordings on which a 57 has been used.
;61252401]Just my opinion on them, they are very low end I think. Avcom used to use them for conferences in my job. I would think thats all they are fit for. And sorry by the way that you did end up with a fake.
maybe you are using fakes ....:D

ive found the 58 to be a great mic .

Any mic is only as good as what it's plugged into.

thin, no low end , brittle .

best used for an under snare mic at a push

Guys what do you make of buying mics second hand off adverts.ie? I was looking to buy a sm57 or sm58 but I am extremely wary now after noticing that there are alot of results on google for "fake sm57/sm58". I have no prior experience with mics so is there anything I can do to make sure Im not conned?

True, but someone in china has copped thats how a lot of people judge mics. We got a broken cheapo one in to try to fix, felt heavy but was crap, they packed pewter into it!

bought some thomann Mics ages ago, a copy 57,58 and a 87 copy.

to be honest, the copy 57 sounds great on snare and amp cabs, the other 2 are useless unless being used to mic amp cabs live..not in studio
i now have a ****e load of beta57a's and proper 58's, cant ebat em imo.

what i would do si stay away from Beta58A's..they just dont sound right

Bought an SM58 in this place during the week. The guy running it is a gentleman and he is actually selling SM57/58s for less than Thomann. Highly recommend the place.
