95 Scania 143 450hp Or 95 Volvo fl10 360hp

    ok i went to look at both trucks. plenty of power in the 143 but maybe to much. i found the power in the volvo plenty for what i want it for.
    im just wondering is there much diffreance in fuel consuption since the scania is a v8 and the volvo is a straight 6. id love the scania because its looks alot better but the state the country is in, i just want something thats gonna be reliable and handy on fuel. and of cource theres a big diffreance in the price. the scania is 5000 euro more.

    for fuel the volvo, for power the scania, and on the pocket deffinatly the volvo

    I would be inclined to go with the Volvo myself.

    Couple of things to note about them if you are going to view one.

    Kingpins have a plastic bush at the bottom and even if it is greased well they find it hard to take the punishment. The kingpins are easy done if you are able to do your own work.

    The z cam brakes are great when they are working but they really are a bastard if some router was at them.

    The engines cannot take overheating. Do it once and it will never be the same again even if you do rebuild.

    Front wheel bearings on these AFAIK are oil filled. This is not a problem normally but if you have those stupid hubcaps on and it leaks you may not notice the oil and there is not an awful lot of it.

    The Scania is a solid workhorse but most of them at this stage have had a very hard life.

    A mate of mine in Monaghan has one that dropped a liner recently. He was quoted 12,000 for a re-built lump!

    Kingpins can give bother on these too if neglected and much like the volvo are the milk bottle shapped ones and are handy enough to change.

    They are severe on juice as well. Big mileage ones will have lots of small sh1tty bits wrong with them like headlamp brackets and bonnet hinges cracked or worn, saying that they are a workhorse and do not give all that much trouble and for that reason they are still holding their prices quite well.

    You thought about a FH12, bit more comfort for you and its tongue wont be hanging out just as badly as the FL

    The 360Hp FL10 was not sold in Ireland until 1996, give me the chassis number and I will check, there may have been some registered in the UK in late 1995 as it did not matter to them at the time as ther registeration number changed in August back then.

    the 360 FL10 is a tough little yoke for its size , we ran a 97 one, it got driven as hard as it would go from the day it arrived and was very little bother, it went through a good few air compressors/dryers but thats a known FL weak point anyway . Try and get one with the 12 speed or 16 speed box, the standard 8 speeder+ crawler had big gaps between ratios that would catch it out on the hills (revving out in one gear, not able to take the next)

    Compressor/air dryer failuer on the Volvo FL10, it is purley down to poor maintenance, the air dryer filters need to be changed every 3 months, if not the air dryer filter blocks up with carbon, then the pipes between the air dryer and compressor also block up with carbon (these pipes are used to cool the air after it passed through the compressor),then the air entering the air dryer is too hot and burns out the seals in the air dryer and also the valves in the air dryer will get stuck open with pieces of carbon, the truck will then not build up air pressure high enough, plus the compressor has to work much harder, if you change the filters every 3 months this prevents the problem.
