Rule question

Im pritty new to golf & have a quick rule question on two things that happened today. I want to make sure im doing the right thing and giving myself the correct penalties.

I was playing in a comp today and the following happened:

On the 2nd hole I over shot my drive, the ball landed in the semi rough off the fairway . When I got up to where it landed it was nowhere to be seen so it must have took a dirty bounce into the heavy rough. We had a good look but couldnt find it.

So I droped a ball from where I thought it had entered into the rough and took a 1 shot penalty and played on.

On the 5th hole I bananna sliced my drive straight into the heavy rough so I shot a provisional ball. I couldnt find my first ball so I took a 1 shot penalty and played on with the provisional.

Did I do the right thing in both cases??

I did ask the guys I was playing with at the time but they where not to sure either.

    Thanks,

    Alan

You were right with the second, but once you could not find your drive you should have gone back to the tee and shot again (the second drive being your 3rd) afaik. You gained whatever you were up the fairway as an advantage by taking your 3rd there instead of off the tee box.

When you couldnt find your ball on the second you should have gone back to the tee and taken it again. This would have been your third shot.

Similarly on the 5th hole when you hit a provisional this would have been your third shot. 1st shot was your original drive and 2nd shot is a penaly stroke. Did you take the provisional drive as being your second or third shot?

Crap, I had a feeling I done the wrong thing after we had finnished when I was thinking back.

So if you drive off the tee and cant find the ball after you always have to go back and hit off your 3rd from the tee again.

What if the ball goes out of bounds or into water off the tee is it the same as above?

On the 2nd hole, when you couldn't find the ball, you should had return to the tee box and play your 3rd shot as it a 2 penalty shot if you cant find your ball.

Same applies for the 5th hole when u sliced it. Your provinical ball would have been your 3rd shot and when landed on fairway/rough, that would be your 4th shot.

    Cheers,

I continued on with the provisional and took the provisional as my 3rd. When I got to the provisional I was taking my 4th.

    Cheers,

I made a mess of it on the 2nd hole but did the right thing on the 5th, not that it will make a differance on this ocassion as I played crap and theres no fear of my steeling 1st place from anyone but I surpose at least I know now and wont do it agian.

    Thanks guys,

    Alan

If the ball goes out of bounds you always play again from where you originally played the shot regardless of whether it was a tee shot or not.

If you enter a water hazard tou can take a drop for a one shot penalty at the point of entry. You can drop back as far as you wish. You can also play from where you originally played the shot.

If the ball enters a lateral water hazard you can only drop back 2 club lenghts from the point of entry.

Thats great stuff, thanks for clearing that up for me.

If the ball enters a lateral water hazard you can only drop back 2 club lenghts from the point of entry.
You can also choose to replay the shot (under penalty of course)
In golf you can always replay your last shot.
