Only in games that support crossfire, what games do You play and at what resolution? (could be completely overkill if You only got a 19" monitor)

22 inch samsung hdmi monitor and i usually play at 1980 x 1050. but i knock it down a fair bit on high res games because i only have a 4850 atm.

fallout 3, farcry 2 , crysis, gta4, all the high enders.

IMO a single 4890 would do the job nicely. Cost/performance it's great. Get one with a decent bit of memory and it should manage the res. The only game there that would use that bit more is Crisis.

    +1
Single 1GB 4890 is enough, You'd even max Crysis, just not with AA

Sli and crossfire don't scale that well, two gpu's for about ~30% more performance. You could get a 4870x2, they're dropping in price all the time, I got mine a few weeks ago for under €300

i actually use that quite a lot. its needed in 3d max. i suppose i cud start with one 4890, and upgrade later. but here we are ten replys later and my question still goes unanswered :D

which is better, ati 4890 crossfire. or a gtx 295

I've answered it, it completely depends on the game.
    Fallout 3: You'd max this with a single 4890
Farcry 2: Would probably run better on Crossfire, but You'd have no problem maxing it with AA on a single 4890
Crysis: GTX 295, its a Nvidia optimised game
Gta4: It doesn't matter, doesn't support either Sli or Crossfire so You'd be running on a single gpu, Its a cpu limited game

What cpu and ram You got? Might be better opt for a 4890 and look into a ram or cpu overclock or upgrade instead
