Have you ever asked about being upgraded to 1st class while checking in?

I don't care for the extras, just the extra space

I have asked many times, never successful though. I hear you on the space issues.

do they even offer you first class for a certain price?

Asking will pretty much never work. Aer Lingus don't have first class anyway, just business..still better than economy though :P

Paying, however, might. Generally though, they'll look for a ridiculous amount of money on the day. A little while back Aer Lingus were doing a promotion seeing upgrades for a couple of hundred euro each way, but they had to be booked well in advance of the flight date. For a flight to NY, it generally is hardly worth it in my opinion.

When you compare it to other airlines first class/business offerings it is very poor in comparison. It would only be worth it for a 10-11 hour flight to San Francisco.

People say there are ways to get upgraded but asking is definately not one of them.

You are nearly guaranteed to be told NO if you ask.

If you arrive late in the hope they have oversold coach then you may be upgraded BUT they will know they are overbooked and will pick people out to offer the upgrade to.

The woman with a screaming baby will definately not be considered and the guy in a tracksuit probably wont either. They will normally pick out somebody they "figure" will not upset the fully paying business class passengers.

I heard of a guy who "slipped"(yeah right) on the walkway onto the plane and his wife claimed to be a Doctor. She demanded he get a different seat with more legroom knowing damn well that the only way to get more room is to either sit on an exit row but you cannot if you are impaired so they obviously were moved to business class on the fear of the couple suing the airline.
