i find it hard to believe kerry are 3/1 2nd favs beind tyrone,
imo even with donaghy they have fallen behind,
but without donagy they look very average,
i think they will beat sligo but sligo will run them a lot
    closer than people think,
it would be a poor reflection on the rest of country if
    kerry somehow win sam

Well, they haven't missed a final since 2003, so the bookies are hardly going to lengthen the odds after a couple of bad games. There's still a lot of football to be played and only a fool would write off Kerry's chances.

    Halfway through the season

Cork look like they could challenge- they never do
Kerry look vunerable- yet they always find a way into the final
Dublin look unstoppable- and lose it in the last quarter or a semi
Tyrone - look like they're going to win it - everyone falls down injured
Galway- No one east of the Corrib is taking it seriously- they have one glorious loss ahead of them

Mayo- well, ring up your mate from Mayo and ask them is this their year. Ring him in September and his phone is off.

Turn off RTE, Turn on your Brain. The bookies are not stupid.

    Excellent summary.

Depends on the draw too, far too early to call.

The next week will tell a lot.

Nice one ...we (Mayo) just need to avoid Kerry for once, this is our year:)

In addition to Mr Incognito's excellently expressed points, there is also the factor that in a not very large market, that most of the money the bookies are likely to have taken early on in the year would likely have gone on Kerry on the basis of the of Kerry's impressive NFL performance.

When you take Tyrone out of the equation, none of the other teams have any sort of decent form in Croker come the end of August/September.
At one stage in the Longford game there were 40 All-Ireland medals amongst the 15 Kerry players on the pitch.

Overall while they haven't performed impressively so far this year, Kerry are still one of the top teams in the country and still have some of the best footballers in the country.

This it does almost seem like an awful hostage to fortune type post.
Almost tempted to refrain from posting it for a few hours.;)

I'm going to post what I posted in the Kerry GAA thread.

    Well,just home from the game.
    Exciting but hard to take.
We are nowhere at the moment.
If the Sligo penalty taker scored,we were out of the championship.
    Simple as.
Lot of fellas under performing,Scan,Sean Sul,both Walshs & Gooch.
Galvin was outstanding in the first half.
Two of the Sés played well but Marc was roasted by the nippy #13 Kelly.

A friend of mine texted me after the game, "hopefully we get Antrim in Killarney".
    Fingers crossed...

Kerry are playing very poorly, but write them off at your peril. They'll make the semi finals at least, purely because even though they're playing poorly by their own standards, theres few teams about good enough to capitalise on it.

"hopefully we get Antrim in Killarney".

A bit harsh considering the game hasnt even been played yet. And you wonder why the other 31 counties always hope you get put out every year! kerry fans show no respect most teams in ireland simply expecting to win them all and expecting to hammer the so-called "weaker" teams. :pac:

Kerry might be lacking a bit of confidence at the moment but the only time I wouldn't consider them a threat is when they are out of the championship.

I Wouldnt mind limerick meeting kerry in the round 4 qualifier. We could well take kerry out of it.
In semple stadium, they were giving us the results from the other games.
Loudspeaker: kerry 14 points, sligo 1 goal and ten.
    Everybody: *GROAN*.

Actually is you were to count the number of senior all irelands that kerry and cork have in both games you will find we are on par.

    Cork: Hurling = 30, Football = 6, Total = 36

    Kerry: Hurling = 1, Football = 35, Total = 36

Just a little fact i like to throw in when people start using "kerry can't play hurling" card ;)

I'm sure the comment made was relating to football though not both.

Also it is a bit unfair to be assuming Antrim will be in the draw tomorrow evening, give them a chance. No one gave limerick a chance against Cork and they should of won.

In fact, Kerry cant play much else ! They dont contribute to soccer, rugby, hurling etc at all.

lol. over the last 5 years, weve had more soccer players playing international underage than any county except dublin and maybe cork. ever heard of Darran and Billy Dennehy and Sean Kelly? spells at Sunderland, Everton, Celtic and Arsenal for those lads recently.

Theres about 20 Kerry lads playing League of Ireland soccer for various clubs.
For the first time ever, LOI soccer is being played in kerry this year with the team odds on for promotion to division 1 already.
Theres currently 3 kerry players on the Irish Junior team.

As for Rugby, ever heard of Mick Galwey? he is a born and bred Kerryman.
Mick Doyle? former international player and coach. his bother Tommy, also played for ireland?

we also have some fantasitc athletes competing for ireland at running (Gillian O sullivan) and cycling (eugene moriarty) and also golf.

GAA is number one in Kerry and always will be but theres talent to burn in the county which often goes unnoticed due to the success of GAA.

Good man homerjay2005, you saved me doing another rant :D

Got mates from Limerick and Tipp who always bring this arguement up.

Anyway I thought this post was just releted to Gaelic Football so lets try and keep on topic.

Was at the match yesterday. Not sure how is looked on TV but it was exciting enough to watch, although again i was disapointed with the performance.

Galvin was outstanding. Really gave his all. I've aways said even though he is a hot head, he more than makes up for it when he plays like that.

A very funny moment was when Dara O'Se got the yellow card. He was still mouthing away with the player and ref when Galvin goes over to him and appeared to tell him to calm down. Classic:D

Hard to know are we going to go anywhere really. If we can manage to get through the next round maybe they will up there performance.

    Hope so!

Yes caught the last half hour of the game. Sligo had so many chances to at least get on level terms in final quarter hour. Good penalty save by Kerry keeper but was right height for him. Star is obviously a huge loss for Kerry and not convinced about their all ireland credentials without him. think if you were chose it would be between Dublin Cork and Tyrone at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,817 ✭✭✭corny

Yes it is premature to writing Kerry off but if i were a Kerryman i'd be very worried. Too many of their players are sending out the been there, done that vibe. With all due respect to Sligo and Longford going through the motions is probably good enough against them but if Kerry approach the rest of their games like this i can see them coming off (badly) second best to likes of Tyrone etc.

Don't think bad form is at the heart of it. Its the desire they're lacking at the minute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,346 ✭✭✭✭homerjay2005

i will save all the negativity if/when we go out of the championship. there was a thread title on the kerry forum in 2006 titled seeking redemption, this now applies to 2009 also. we haveturned around our years before, we can still win this all ireland.

    Micklow! Thats brilliant!

I hope we'll look back on this thread in September and laugh!

We aren't at the top of our game, but we're still pulling games out of the fire.
And all this bs, about Sligo being a bad team! They have fantastic footballers, and could have beaten us, had they had 1 more forward.

Kerry are always a threat, never let that be forgotton, Im not sure its our year this year, but we should not be discounted so easily.

As an avid rugby fan, and having played the sport for years, I have heard of the negligible number of Kerrymen who played the sport. One cant keep trotting out the Galway, and Moss Keane argument. I believe Dublin GAA almost lost Mark Vaughan to rugby. That is only the tip of the iceberg. How many Kerrymen have been on the top teams of the past 10 years besides Mick Galway ? How many Kerrymen have played at top international soccer tournaments ?

You can waffle on all you like about underage football, and the League of Ireland (which is regrettably close to implosion), however, it doesnt mask the fact that Kerry's contribution to Irish sports is more reliant on Gaelic Football then anything else. You can talk about local talent to "burn", but it is not really of public knowledge.

Think Mark Vaughan was more noted for Soccer when he was in Blackrock College. Won an all Ireland schools medal with them.

As long as Kerry are in the Championship they'll always remain a threat. Their only scraping through games but their still making progress and they remind me of Tyrone last year who scraped past Westmeath and Mayo and we all know what happened after that!

to get back to subject, Kerry may be second or third favourites but they wont win Sam producing form from last two games. Without Star they are not the same team. Sligo had chance to beat them yesterday. Sooner or later someone will.
