    Hi,

Can some help me with a translation please... The Irish for Dublin Airport, is it Aerfort Átha Claith or Aerfort Bhaile Átha Claith (or would this be Dublin City Airport?)

    Many thanks,
    H

The official name for Dublin is "Baile Átha Cliath" but you will often find the "Baile" part dropped as it is deemed unnecessary, not wanted or just inappropriate.

Aerfort Bhaile Átha Cliath is the official name, used in legislation, etc.

In terms of correctness of Irish, aerfort átha cliath and aerfort bhaile átha cliath are both equally correct.

Because the 'baile' is in the official name for Dublin you have the situation where someone from let's say Balbriggan or Blackrock are meant to have 'Condae Bhaile Átha Cliath' for 'County Dublin' in their address. Whereas 'Condae Átha Cliath' is preferred by most. I'm told it was De Valera who insisted on sticking with the 'Baile' when he had the chance to officially drop it. Now officialdom is stuck with it.

Tecnically speaking Contae Átha Claith doesn't exist. But, if we're talking about technicalities then Co. Bhaile Átha Cliath is only the region controlled by Dublin City Council. The other areas of traditional postal Co. Átha Cliath are Co. Dhún Laoghaire/Ráth an Dúin, Co. Fhine Gall and Co. Átha Cliath Theas.

So, for the sake of the postal area "Co. Dublin", "Co. Átha Cliath" is preferred.

baile átha cliatha or contae átha cliath

of course the baile can be dropped - calling it the things you said isnt right tbh

We are stuck with 'Baile' for the whole County and City. So officially it's Cathair Bhaile Átha Cliath for Dublin City and Condae Bhaile Átha Cliath for County Dublin. Thankfully we are free to use the vernacular which drops the 'Baile' altogether.

Also it's Dún Laoghaire, Condae Bhaile Átha Cliath. The postal addresses never altered when the Council was carved up.

I don't understand what your point is?

I said that the postal address was never changed... but that does not mean the postal address has any official status. You can call it what you want. However, I've listed the counties of Dublin that do continue to have official status in legislation. Seeing as Contae Bhaile Átha Cliath is 'officially' now a limited area of Dublin, it would be counterintuitive for anywhere outside of the DCC area to call themselves Contae Bhaile Átha Cliath.

I take your point but clearly postal addresses do have official status as they were set up by a Government department, the Dept. of Posts and Telegraphs which ceased to be in 1984 when An Post and Eircom came into being in its stead. It seems that Fingal and the rest can carry on with their areas of administration without resorting to changing postal addresses.
