Placebo are doing a european tour including 2 dates in Dublin in December, i like them wouldn't say I love their music but what did get me excited was

"PLACEBO are delighted to announce that they will be joined on their European Autumn & Winter Tour by the bands EXPATRIATE and SILVERSUN PICKUPS"

Two other bands I really like more so than the main act to be honest!

I'd be interested in how well these gigs will do to be honest I know Placebo became a bit of a cult hit mid 90's but would many people still go see them?

yeah it'd be class alright! They just did a tour which included dates in london but I couldn't get over to it so would love if they came to Ireland even if just supporting.

I doubt it, especially since the seating tickets left are Upper Circle and you have to go through a different door to the main one to get to these seats.

Sorry if this is the wrong thread of if this has been asked before, I searched and couldn't find anything.

I've got a standing ticket for Placebo on the 16th December next week and I'm wondering are pit passes handed out for standing gigs in the Olympia? If so what time should I be there to get one?

    Thanks in advance :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 179 ✭✭Goldigga

They do give out pit passes. Probably about 40 or 50. Just get there early. It's dead handy when you get the passes, because as soon as you have it, you can head to the bar and wait until the gig is starting before you head down to the front, knowing no matter how busy the place is you will have a savage spot!

    Only 40 or 50?
So basically the first 5 or 6 rows in the pit?
Hmm, that may be a bit of trouble because I'm in school that day, my have to convince my parents to let me have a half day...
    Thanks!

The olympia is an intimate venue i wouldnt worry about pit passes you have a great view from everywhere!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 77 ✭✭claireblossom

Yeah but I'm a big fan an its my first time seeing them so I want to be fairly close lol.
Would getting there at around 3 be early enough?
Thats the earliest my Mams letting me take off school.

ye 3 will be well early. The olympia is small so you'll be close up no matter what.

Placebo December 2000 in the olympia to this date is till the best gig ive ever been to. have seen them a few times since in Europe but nothing will ever top that.

Cant wait for this, Battle for the Sun is imo the best thing since BMM.

And i love Silversun Pickups to...cant wait for Tuesday!

Same. I enjoyed it but it wasn't what I had expected. More of a mix of old stuff with the new could have lifted it.

Spot on there, I thought they were pretty average.

I understand that the band have been playing some songs in gigs for over 10 years but people still expect to hear them. I liked the different versions of older songs they played and some of the new stuff. The gig started out really well but kind of tapered off a bit. Still, I would definitely go again if I had the chance - it was quite a good night, I just wouldn't call it brilliant.

    Going tonight.

I love the new album (Think it's the best thing they've released) so not bothered by them playing all the new tunes :D

Going tonight aswell, looking forward to it.

Who's playing support and what time did they come on stage for? Got to try and get out of work at a decent hour!

they haven't played anything (except taste in man and every u every me) from the first albums which are the best part of their discography in my opinion.
The most of the songs was from the last album, few of them were pretty good (ie devil in details) but they have indulged in it too much.
Don't understand also why it was forbidden by the Placebo management to take pics of the gig.

I *almost* splashed €50 on a ticket for tonight just because a mate was up for it that I hadn't seen in a while and I liked Placebo back in the day..... from the above it sounds like it was money well saved. I remember at the pumpkins gig in the Olympia (LAST EVER EUROPEAN GIG...... lol) the security were going MENTAL trying to stop people taking pictures. I almost had a bloody disposable.. disposed of :(

I definately can see how the die-hard Placebo fans, who would have been with them from the beginning would be disappointed with the set-list. About 13/14 songs out of 20 were from last 2 albums.
For me, it was one of the best gigs I was ever at, as it's these 2 albums and the greatest hits that are mostly in my CD player. The atmosphere in the Olympia was unreal, and I think the band latched on to this. It was great seeing the passion between the band members after the last song. I've never seen them before, so I don't knon if they usually embrace each other like that.
I'd give it 9/10. Would have got 10 if they played Bitter End.
Some of the tunes from the new album are brilliant live.

I've been listening to Placebo since '96 and thought they could have been a lot better - they ignored their excellent back catalogue completely. Thought that the Silversun Pickups were excellent however and the crowd responded well to them....Just hope Pearl Jam remember to play the old stuff when they come!

Silversun Pickups were great alright - much better than Placebo for me.

I was disappointed by last nights gig too, setlist wasnt great.
Was delighted with Bright Lights, the best song on BFTS imo although I found the album itself disappointing, I much preferred Meds and I would have liked to have seen them touring for that album.

Last time I saw them was in Wembley for the greatest hits gig which was fantastic and before that was the Olympia 2000 and the SFX,last nights performance just left me feeling a little hollow compare to their previous gigs. Pity

Seeing as they haven't bothered to play a non-festival gig here in almost 10 years, would it have hurt to play for a little longer, or play some more of their back-catalogue? I wasn't too impressed with that side of it, I have to say.

Otherwise, the songs from BftS sound good live, but not much different from on the album. I'd give it a 7/10, but then, I have no prior comparison [unless you count the Soulmates DVD, which...doesn't count].

Hilarious mix of people in the audience, though. To one side, lesbians mawling each other aggressively and thin, androgynous gay men; on the other, moshing/jumping brodudes.

This was a typical example of a terrible show. I believes its the first gig where I have actually left before the encore was over!

So looking forward to it, and they let fans down 10fold. Im not one for banter at gigs but, they just didnt look like they wanted to be there. Given it was 2 sold out shows, they could of made an effort, played some more of the hits. It was a strong start, first 2/3 songs then downhill, everyone was standing there kinda scratching their heads.

Such a shame, I wont be paying to see these again!

Really enjoyed the gig, but then i had listened to the new album. the band should definitly have made the effort to play more classics but equally the crowd should have made the effort to actuallyto listen to the album that the band were touring with. It was not a greatest hits tour and they didnt claim it to be, that said definitly more hits needed. they crowd were so lack luster and wet, very few up for it at all. Will go and see placebo again the first chance i get but probably not here.

Oxegen 06 ring a bell. I was kinda getting into them back then, saw this performance and was turned off them in a big way.

Oxegen 2006 was pretty awful...but it was a festival gig at about 5 in the afternoon when the band were used to headlining festivals across Europe. They put a bit of effort in, but as i said in previous posts, Placebo were awful during the Meds tour. But Twenty Years was awesome that day...
