Passat 1.9 TDi starting issues

Folks, just looking for a bit of advise here before I go to a mechanic.

I've had this car for the last year and 2 months without an ounce of trouble. It's a newer model Passat. Every morning it starts like clockwork. On Tuesday night last, I ran it near empty and filled it up fully at my local Tesco. On Wednesday morning I got up and went to work. Started up again with no issues.

On Wednesday evening, when leaving work, it started like a bit of a lame dog, chuggin for about 10 seconds before having to give it a bit of acceleration before starting. It also produced a small plume of black smoke, which never happens. It's been like that ever since.

I was just wondering could it have been dirty diesel or does anyone else think there maybe an underlying issue? I looking for a clearer picture in case I've to go to a mechanic. There's 109K Km on it is case that might be an issue

    Thanks

Sounds like bad diesel, id get the tank drained, and re-filled and change your fuel filter:)

Running near empty can drag all the gunk from the bottom of the tank into the system. May be the case that there's crap clogging the filter or something

Is there cleaning fluid or something I could drop into the tank maybe?

Sorry, when I said near empty, the clock was showing that there was 20km left in the tank

That would be near empty. You are talking about having 2litres left in the tank.

Is there any possibility flanzer could tell from looking at his fuel filter, if there are any signs of him sucking up dirty/gunk diesel?

Is the car still starting the way it was on Wednesday?

    dodgy glowplugs ?

Glowplugs are not really needed in modern direct injection engines.

More than likely some sh1t in the tank got sucked up into the strainer.

My guess would be the fuel pump might be about to give up the ghost. Check with VW dealer to see if your car is included in the recall for the fuel pumps.

Checked when I bought it and the fuel pump was done as part of that recall. Started a bit sluggish today but not as bad like previous days. Maybe the gunk is clearing?
