    Hi there :)
Im Soccymonster. (a girl btw). I just did the junior cert so I wont be writing as much next term on here.
Yeah, I guess you can write here next term but I think you will find it preety boring as next years 3rd years will be just talking about their own mocks, subject choices, exams blah blah blah.
Ps. Its very quiet here during the summer hols.:P

a first year. thats class. welcome

You'll probably be eclipsed by the masss of next year's JCers blabbing about their own exams and subsequent results! :) It's good to see you're excited about starting in first year, there's not much to worry about in first year. Keep working away, don't worry, and this time 3 years on you'll be very glad you did. :)

You got a long way to go, 3rd year is a joke looking back on it, it looks rock hard in 1st year but looking at my books for 5th year now and they look like impossible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭RHunce

hmm possibly the youngest person here lol

well im going into 5th year now and i did 4th year too, looking back 2nd year is the hardest year and 3rd year is the best year ever imo, miles ahead of 4th even

    have fun in secondary school!

Make sure you do not skip 4th year, biggest mistake I ever made, was too young going to University and didn't end up finishing, you have an awful long way to go, but start as you mean to go on, keep studying away and you'll do fine.

    I'm 23 now! 11 years ago I started, JESUS!

Just don't act like you've entered some kind of new cool realm and that your old now, your not, 1st and 2nd years are always seen as just kids by everyone else so don't act like your too cool or whatever.

Nothing to worry about in the JC besides Irish and English and Maths they are all difficult to study for, the rest is easy enough.

And theres always some poor child that brings a wheelie bag each year. :P

Thats what everyone says, never happens though. Every teacher only thinks about their class only and tells you to bring in a stupid amount of books and hardbacks etc for each subject and every average first year is gonna follow the rules and bring it all in. Sooner or later you get used to a pattern of what you actually use and what you don't.

Example of that is our geography teacher told us to bring in our book, our workbook, 2 copies, a hardback and the atlas in every day(class days obviously). All we ever used is the book and a copy and the other stuff barr the atlas which we didnt even open once he told us to bring it in the day before its needed.

So yeah, Don't be a sucker bring in the main book and a copy, you won't get into any trouble.

The less stuff you bring in the better.

what type of bag did you get? Please dont say a black sporthouse one or a wheelie? LOL!
Maybe its just my school but nearly everyone has a black sporthouse bag. Im smart, i got a purple one instead :D.

Tip : You have a locker so dont go around with a bag popping out a mile. It can hurt people. I should know, i got a couple of whacks in the past. :P

I haven't even looked at my fourth/fifth (dunno which to say here because my school doesn't do ty)... too afraid!

    Okay, to the first year!!
My advice to you is don't go into first year terrified of everything that moves! Most first years go in with a wide eyed approach (myself included three years ago, feels like yesterday...), but really, you should just relax.

Oh, and be prepared for older students who'll be saying "Aw! Little First Years!" That happens every year in my school.

Keep working when second year comes around. The amount of people in my year who sat back in 2nd was unreal, and then they all had a major shock in 3rd. Don't believe anyone who tells you that it's a doss year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 Tax

Yeah, Im going into 2nd Year. In first year, you barely get any homework compared to the rest of the year. Emm, just be prepared for what's to come. This may sound like your parents but, do your homework. Simple as. It might seem like a lot but it sure comes in handy when you get your tests ;)

dont worry kid by 6th year you will figured out which classes you can get away with having no book for etc making your bag much lighter and you have the mighty invention of the locker too very handy for cramming everything into!!!

man i feel old now after just doing the leaving!!secounday school absolutely flys bye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!enjoy it!!

I thanked alot of post as they simpley sumed things up.

My opinions of first years are :

    1. They always act too cool.
    2. They act as if your friends when they see you out of school.
    3. They carry un-necessarily large bags around.
    4. Most of them think they are too cool to study and put all the studiers down and then when it comes to 3rd year they are afraid to go to school because "I wasn't bothered to study in 1st and 2nd year so now I'm boll*xed for the Junior Cert. (All I can do is laugh because I did study and it will hopefully help in the comming year:)

Things that will happen to first years:

    1. They will be shouted at in the corridors.
    2. They will be cut up in qeues.
    3. They will be pushed/shoved out of the way.
    4. They will be thrown of pitches etc. if an older year wants them.

I'm sure I could go on but I'll spare you the grim details ;)

    * * * * * * *

    On a serious note:
1st year is brilliant and relaxed provided you work.
Study, you'll be glad of it in 2nd and 3rd year.
    Take part in activities.
    Talk to EVERYONE.
Try to keep a low profile while doing all of this.

I almost forgot the most important rule:

NEVER START ON ANYONE IN ANOTHER YEAR WHEN IN 1ST YEAR (no matter how "solid" you are). YOU WILL LOOK STUPID AND YOU WILL NEVER WIN OR GET ANYWHERE. :p

history was really easy! and i was really really bad at it. but just do what i did, (if you're doing pass) just go over the people in history section in the exam papers and try to find a sequence of what essays you think will come up..i learned 9 for my JC and 6 came up ^_^ and also just do all the short questions in the exam papers, they are worth loads of marks and you only do 10 outta 20 so its all good. and dont worry even if you are in honours, 3rd yr is basically going over all the crap you did in 1st and 2nd year! so if you listen this year you will do grand, but dont forget to have fun, 3rd year is better then 1st and 2nd year (and so far, TY) so yeah..i got my results yesterday and i got an A in history ^^ so if i can do it anybody can =D

We had that learned by second year. We could only mess with the History teacher. Poor thing. He's the most hilarious teacher, but he doesnt realise how and is almost bullied by us laughing at him. He can get so confused sometimes when it comes to our class! :p:D:rolleyes::P

Oh good Lord yes. My friends and I hate first years like that. A girl in our class still hasnt learned though. She carries all nine of the classes subjects in her bag each day, because she thinks going to her locker takes too much time and that doing that after school means she'll miss her bus. I got a really cute Winnie the Pooh bag, and she got the same one two days later. At some stage during the first two years this was, just not sure when! I could barely fit 3 subjects in it and she carried all nine. I could barely carry them it was so heavy too! o_O I wasnt happy she copied, to say the least. Quite scared and freaked out. She is weird though.

I've never seen a child with a wheelie bag before though. I nearly did when I badly hurt my shoulder, but I thought I'd look too silly!:P

Whats the silliest school bag you have seen in secondary?
Mine was a Dora the Explorer one by a third year!

First year- Just dont try too hard. But do study for your exams. I never studied during the year [I still got A's and B's though. Just naturally gifted. :P] If there is one thing you've gotta do, its study for those exams! I never studied so hard. I only got one C last year, and that was Honors Maths. 67% :D Highest was 70% - and that was the girl who gets 100% on average. My teacher was well impressed! I was too.:D:D:D

I had a weelie bag in first year and so did a couple others!!
I was finished with mine after 2 days LOL I broke the handle or something on it :/

It was only last year(2nd) I relised how annoying they are though. People pulling them around corridors and up the stairs Urghh!

You will get pushed around a little bit, but thats what the pecking other does. I remember trying to push my way around everyone and now all the 1st years jump out of the way. Awww :D
It gets kinda funny when the first years are a tall group. Last year they were really, really tall. Most of them were looking down at my friends!

LOL the way it goes in secondary is:
1st Years: quiet lil chaps working away..
2nd Years: dnt give a damn bout work, mess around..
3rd Years: realise they missed out on crap loads in 2nd year, try to learn as much as they can, but too late in some cases..
    =D
    other years - dunno yet..

As regards height theres 1 simple rule:
1st Years get smaller every year!
    xD

It's the same every year. The first years appear to get smaller but it's the others who are watching them are the ones getting bigger!

In my school they are actually getting smaller... I was the smallest in my year in 1st year and have only grown about 2 inches since (now 5'1) and now there are at least 10 first years below my shoulder, two below my elbow, and one below my waist (we got a dwarf this year, as in an official dwarf. He has to stretch to a middle locker and I feel so bad for him. For the first two weeks you could hear the sniggers everytime he walked past. It was terrible.)

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 7,849 Mod ✭✭✭✭suitcasepink

Theres one first year this year myself and a few friends have taken it upon ourselves to hate. She goes around with this wheelybag(i know!) and she seriously pushes and barges past everyone. And shes not a light little thing either I saw her push past a second year and the second year almost went flying!! And then with her stupid wheelybag shes always running over peoples toes with the feckin thing..

So yeh any first years that fit this description, make sure you do not fit this description ASAP!

There's always one! One lad in my year doesn't use his either and the bag is very very heavy.
