    Hi all,
Well I lost my job at the end of June... I was looking at a few options and trying my best not to go on the dole and get back working asap. I heard today that I have a fab new job but it's not starting for 2 weeks. I'm broke and need some money to keep me going. I have heard people saying it takes ages for the dole to come through. Is there another way I can get it, seeing as I just need the help for 2 weeks until I start working again?

    Thanks a mil :)

You'd be better off asking a friend/family member for a loan. I doubt you'd get anything from the state in such a short time.

You will not get dole for ages. Ask a friend best bet.

As a more general question, what reasons would a person have for not going on the dole as soon as they are unemployed.

I'm fairly sure if you explain to the social welfare officer that you need money urgently they can give you a cheque to keep you going as long as they are fairly confident you are entitled to dole.

Yeah, as above, you should get Supplementary Welfare Allowance immediately and then a cheque for the difference (which won't be much) when your two weeks' dole is processed.

OP here....I didn't go on the dole straight away mostly because of pride (stupid I know but I have always been really independant and looked after myself) I had a couple of work trials to do, none of which I took because of bad conditions. I was really determined to get another job asap and keep myself afloat. I have budgeted well to keep my bills in order this month but the new job is monthly wages so it will be late August before I get paid.... so there ya go, need a few bob to keep me going until then :)

That supplementry allowance sounds like the option to go with.....

    Cheers guys!

You realise while in your last job you were paying PRSI which if built up entitles you to the dole when your're out of work. Thats partially why you pay it. I don't see where pride comes into that. It's not really a handout if you are receiving benefit.
