Thinking about investing in the stock market with relatively small amounts of money (Roughly €500-€600, not in one go.). But I would prefer to be able to play the markets myself, what is the best option for this? Would I have to sign up to a stockbrokers?

I'm just looking for a small bit of advice here to get me started I can learn the in's and out's once i'm up and running.

    Thanks

You can set up online accounts with the likes of Goodbody or Daveys, however considering the ammount you are investing you'd have to do very well to make money, as they have transaction charges. Can't remember exactly what charges are, but think is a minimum of 30 euro or so per transaction.

I have heard of other online stock investment sites where you're not buying actual shares but more just like virtual ones that the site sells, and I think with these you can do lesser ammounts. Bull bearings is one, I'm not fully sure of all the working of it but it might suit you better.

The final option is gambling on them, bookies will take bets of sorts on share prices, so you could bet that a certain share will go up 5pts for example. Don't think this option is the best to be honest.

Let us know how it goes anyway if you do get into, I'm tempted by bull bearings myself.

After transaction costs you will find it pretty difficult to pull short term profit (without taking on very high risk) with that amount of money. Plenty of sites offer virtual trading.

Try Investopedia.com for US equities & options

    Try Deltaindex.com for spreadbetting.

    They both offer good simulators.

bit of advice: Don't try to "play" the markets at all, it's impossible. Try investing in an index linked fund that you can pay into every month (like Quinn or Rabodirect) for no transaction cost (or a very low one). And do this long term and don't sell, the only people that gain constantly without fail in the market are the brokers buying and selling constantly.
If you read the financial press and find out exactly why companies are valued the way they are and how broader economic trends are affecting stock valuations then you will quickly get up to speed. Then you'll be better placed to spot individual shares that are good investments and that are genuinely undervalued.
If you want a pure play of the markets, go for spread betting. It has no transaction fees and the profits are tax free since they're treated the same as profits from betting.

600-700? The minimum deposit to Davys when opening an online trading account is 2,000 euro. Probably the same for Goodbodys. For starters Minimum commission is 25euro or 0.75% Internaxx.lu is a good bit less and better for smaller trades.

I would save a bit more if I were you ;) a minimum of 2k to make trades worthwhile.

Have a look at the thread

Spread betting is an option with that amount of money.

Spread betting is an option with that amount of money.

Open a fake account first and see how you do.

Tip: USD low coming in the next week, Wall St. and market in general will top out in next few days.

    DYODD ;)
