    First question: Yes.
    Second: No. Skype is proprietary, although gadgets can be added on either the client or server side to work around the issue.

    There can be a delay in the phone ringing using this box - I'd try an SPA942 instead - really good handset, plugs straight into the router

    What router? There is no router mentioned in the original post. Did you not see where he/she mentions "an ordinary phone"? You're leading him off on a tangent by mentioning the SPA942.

    And if you had a delay with a PAP2 you had a configuration issue local to you, there is no delay with a PAP2.

    Eh, I am? :rolleyes: If he is getting broadband and he is getting a PAYG voip service like say blueface, then the SPA942 is great. It's a quality phone, and I am delighted with the 2 I have. I really like the message waiting light function too. It depends by what the OP means by ordinary phone - does he mean non-cordless, or a traditional Eircom style phone. Anyway, I would have been delighted if someone had advised me to check out the SPA942 when I started using VOIP, as it is the dogs cajones. What do you use on your starship?

    Maybe, but that was my experience. Say if I called in on my mobile, it would ring on the mobile speaker immediately and then a few seconds later the handset would call.

    But back to the OP - the SPA942 won't work with Skype but there are much better options out there than skype (blueface is one example) that it does work with. You can give blueface a free trial by downloading a virtual phone to your computer - I'd try that and compare it to Skype

    Shouldn't be any delay ringing, when using a PAP2. If there is, something is up with your setup, as mentioned!

    @sohappy:
    Only thing worth mentioning though, is that the PAP2 will be sharing your internet connection with everything else. If you start hammering your 3Mb download on the PC, then in all likelihood call quality will suffer if you are on a phonecall at the same time (suffer as in breaking up and dropping out, like a mobile phone in a very weak coverage area). Worst case, the call will disconnect completely.

    Might be worth looking into the next model up to the PAP2, this, an SPA-2102. Basically, this box sits between your UPC cablemodem, and your router, which allows it to give itself priority on your net connection. So you could be downloading full belt on your PC, but the SPA2102 gets first priority on the bandwidth so call quality will be almost unaffected by other downloads. The one you originally were looking at, the PAP2, does not have this function.

    Yes, you are. The original post refers to an ordinary phone. It's not about a VOIP phone. You don't need to get all excited just because you mis-read the thrust of the question asked.

    As to what gear I am using, well right now I'm running through a Norstar MICS system, although I also service plain 'ol asterisk systems too.
