Licence Minimum Requirements

Hi folks, I'm thinking about training to be an airplane pilot but for the moment I'm just doing a bit of research into it. I can't seem to find anywhere with the minimum requirements for each licence, I know there's minimum hours but that there's more to it than that (certain amount of solo/instructed hours, so many take-offs/landings etc). The IAA site only has test dates and application fees, and the schools and clubs only seem to have their own recommendations. Anyone know where I can find more info on this? So far this is all I know...

    SPL:
    - 5 hours
    - Class 2 Medical

    PPL:
    - 45 hours, some of it solo
    - One of your flights has to cover a certain distance, stopping at an airport on the way

Any additions/corrections are very much appreciated.
By the way advice on average times would be useful too but it's minimums I'm more concerned about. Thanks!

Easiest way to get all details is to ring the IAA and ask for Simon White. I can tell u mins for CPL and MEIR. I cant remember the PPL ones.

I don't think you need 5 hours for a SPL, only a Class 2 medical.

    Off the top of my head the requirements for a PPL are;

    1. 45 hours total time.
    2. 10 hours of which are solo.
    3. I'm not 100%, but I think the qualifying cross country is 150NM with one leg being longer than 60NM.
    4. 5 hours instrument appreciation.
    5. Pay the IAA a disgusting amount of money to stamp a piece of paper!

If you're looking for info about becoming an airline pilot, there have been many threads on this forum about this very topic so a quick search will get you a lot of info. Also this topic has been dealt with ad nauseaum over on www.pprune.com

    lol!

OP, would you consider going to the USA for a few weeks if it is only the PPL you are after? The weather in Ireland and flight training do not get on well together and this leads to a lot of wasted time and more importantly wasted money! Flight training is much cheaper in the USA.

It's all in here JAR FCL1, everything you wanted to know about flight crew licensing.

    http://www.jaa.nl/publications/jars/607069.pdf

You can wade through that but the NFC website summarised it nicely www.nfc.ie

One thing, minimum hours are just that, the minimum hours required. Most people require a few more hours than the minimum. Sometimes a lot more hours.

    One other thing
    so many take-offs/landings etc).
The only requirement is that the number of take offs equals the number of landings. LOL Not that anyone is counting.

Pretty much there, you need to complete the ground exams too. I'm just going to do my QXC and then the GST.
