Iphone contacts wierd after upgrade to OS 3.0

I recently upgraded my Iphone 3g to OS 3.0. I had used iTunes to backup the contacts on my Mac before the upgrade. Now a number of the contacts on the iPhone are displayed grouped under '#' instead of the first alphabet of the last name. Any Idea what is happening and how this can be fixed ?
