Can anyone suggest woodland cycling trails between say Waterford,Clonmel, Kilkenny etc? I can find plenty of info on signposted walking trails but little mention of cycling. Is there any real difference?

Out of interest, can anyone tell me how walkers react to MTB's on signposted walking trails? I can imagine that gangs of cyclists whipping past lighting fires and destroying birds nests wouldn't be appreciated but single or pairs of cyclists? I could even stretch to not setting fires....maybe......the doctors say I'm much improved. :p

Varies and I don't know about that part of the country but if you are courteous to walkers, pass slowly and give them priority, they are generally fine.

would imagine most walkers would be okay with a cyclist who gave them right of way on the walking track...

however wouldn't be happy to see a walker on the trails at ballyhoura though (due to safety risk at higher speeds) although i have met them on the fire roads around there and that is fine, loads of room to maneuver..)

wouldn't say the same for the guy i met there last friday pushing his bike the wrong way up the downhill bit at the end...accident waiting to happen, if you met him on a corner there was no hope of avoiding him

@ jerseyeire, anything I hear of I'll let you know.

@thebouldwhacker, that type of cycling is behind me now.

According to Towpath Tours: A Guide to Cycling Ireland's Waterways, there's a towpath along the Barrow that can be cycled along. Later this summer, I hope to cycle from Dublin to Kilkenny via the Grand Canal and Barrow towpaths.

In my experience it depends on the location and age profile of the walkers. Wicklow sees a lot of mature walking clubs and these are usually hostile to MTBs, mainly because they're a big group and because they carry a sense of sole entitlement to use of the mountains. Other locations tend to be more relaxed. Younger people are more friendly, probably wishing they were blitzing it on a MTB instead of foot dragging...

    :p

It depends on what sort of riding you are looking for non technical gravel tracks and fire roads there is a pretty good selection around clonmel

these guys might be able to help http://www.tipperarymountainbikers.org/forum/index.php
the forum is a bit quite but i am sure if you get in contact with some of the lads they will probably be able to point you in the right direction. they know routes on slievenamon, kilsheelan, tickincor, careys castle and out by cahir.

also waterford sportif cycling club have a mountain bike section and do a few spins most weeks. some of their members post on here and may be able to help you with the waterford side of things.

I would be interested to hear how you get on, am looking to join the dark side too in the near future.
