    Hey,

I know this sound like a pain in the ass but i would appreicate any comments.:(

Heading to cork next weekend to see the mother in law  but i'm hoping to get to play a round of golf on a friday morning/afternoon on my way to cork.

Leaving Dublin in the morning, hoping to play golf somewhere along the Dublin-Cork road before i arrive in Cork

Top club. Green fees €60-100 acceptable. What are the best Golf clubs along that route...

It my day off so i'm going to grab the chance to play at a top course

    Any suggestion....muchly apprecaited.:)

    mount juliet
    take a brief detour

Mount Juliet is a good call - not sure about the green fee though - it says 80-90 if you book online. Another option and just as good (played it 2 weeks ago) is Carlow, for €70.

If you're sticking to the N/M7 there's the Heritage (Portlaoise) or, further along, Dundrum in Tipp. If you're looking for a lot of fun, without the 'big' name, I highly recommend Portarlington.

Was that your attempt at sarcasm? If so it failed miserably.

PGA National in Palmerstown (Kill, near Naas) is just off the N7. Certainly worth a round if you haven't played it before.

Ah infacta he's actually correct. The average handicapp for a club golfer in the UK and Ireland is 19.
    Feel like a noob yet?

Just tried the PGA National...€160 green fee for friday...ouch!!!!

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

Ouch indeed! But call them up and do a deal (worth <€100). If there isn't a deal to be done, play somewhere else! Carlow is highly recommended by me also.

whereabout in cork are u headed
in my opinion i would play in cork or close to cork
would be a bit tiring playing a round and having to get back into the car for anything over an hour drive imo and getting tangled up in fri evening traffic
fota is v. near the tunnel if your heading that way might be worth a shot if you want a nice course and good test

on the av handicapgate its 15.2 or 16.3 or whatever your having youself because 1st of all what is an average golfer............surely it depends on how often you play

bob rotella says its 16.3 in the u.s. in one of his audiobooks and that it has not changed even though technology has moved on so much.....
    Average Golfer: Average Golfer Statistics.
The average handicap for men and women is coincidentally 15.2 for both.

Heading to Carriagline...first time down there!

you might have a point there....actually fota wouldnt be too bad...might give them a ring...what about blarney...is that worth ringing up!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,848 ✭✭✭soundsham

    no to blarney imo
bit windy always up there, and in my opinion not one of the best places to play blind, now if you played with a member fine cause you would probably need some help off a few tees ,and its greenkeeping is hit and miss at the moment due to cut backs

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 180 ✭✭Dylan69

just checked the website...3 different course...deerpark,belvelly and barryscourt...
    €60 is good value

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 180 ✭✭Dylan69

"blind shots"....that not how you should the game.
You should see where you going especially off the tee.
Blind shots are a big no no for me. I'm a stickly for good greens:mad:

not really 3 courses it has 27 holes
so there are 3 ways to play 18 hence the 3 course names
    €60 is a steal imo
and hopefully you get to play the original 18, not that the new 9 are bad just not as nice a walk and there animal long
p.s. buy a strokesaver its excellant and get there early for a bite to eat its a great setting, top chageroom showers/steamrooms etc to freshen up also a top academy if you fancy a lesson or want to hit a few before you go out...........better stop you'd be there for about 10 hrs:D

    not exactly what i meant...........
you can off most tees except the most dangerous hole in golf the 10th(where someone will get it in the face someday soon)

there are 5 or 6 par 4's where you may not realise the danger off the tee in so far as you should know which side to miss on or how far the danger is away, there are a few holes where wrong clubbing off the tee would happen easily....both under and over and i just think its one of those courses
..........i know you can get a strokesaver but i just think there are more enjoyable courses if your only going to hit 1

most importantly €60 spent in fota would be way better than €30/40 in blarney

monkstown golf club, douglas golf club all near carigaline........drive to ballykisteen in Tipperary...1hr from cork.....its maturing all the time and is very enjoyable..I prefer it to dundrum...best value on the way down n7/m7 is the heath cheap green fees and course is different to others as there are sheep on it

Carrigaline isnt far from Kinsale. Thats where I stayed when I played Old Head. I know it's damn expensive but id opt to play there. Stick it on the credit card and worry about it next month. Its well worth it in my opinion and as for playing Fota Island, not a bad course by any means but I can't agree with any of the rave reviews I read about from time to time. It wasnt great value for money the time I played there but if you can get a good deal then go for it.

    Hi Dylan,

Dunno if you've booked anything yet but if you don't mind coming from dublin via Limerick there's Open singles in Adare for €60. I played it last Friday & it's in great condition. €60 to play possibly the best parkland course in the country is great value IMO. It should take you no more than 90 mins to get to Cork from there and its about 15 mins from Limerick. It is a superior course to Fota. Now Fota is a fine track but there is just no comparison IMO.
