From the forum charter: Positive recommendations for a good dentist, orthodontist, etc. is allowed

I go to Paul Owens in Upper Baggot St., I find him very good at managing pain, he extracted my bottom two wisdom teeth a few years ago and all in all I thought I got off lightly even though one of them needed a fair bit of brute force before it came out.

Ah grand, I thought I had read in another post that recommendations weren't allowed. I stand corrected.

OP- I hadn't visited the dentist in about 12 years as I was really quite terrified of them but a recent persistent tooth ache forced me into it. I asked just about everyone I know what their dentist was like and I did some asking around here on boards. TBH, who is a regular of this forum told me about a dentist called Dr. Gregory Henry of Pearl Dental on Nassau street.

I had my last visit with him on Thursday and all in all, as far as visits to a dentist can go it was excellent. I told him from the off that I am a nervous patient and hadn't been in 12 years. He was very patient and has a great manner. He explained all my options and recommended what needed to be done. All the time that he was working on me he would ask if I was ok to carry on.

You know one abiding memory I have of the other dentists I visited so many years ago is a little silly but it always put me off going. You know how the gloves they wear always left a horrible taste in your mouth. Things seem to have changed though as there was no horrible after taste which was a nice surprise.
Even the drill didn't seem as noisy or terrifying as I remember it. Once I was waiting in the waiting room while he was working on someone else, I don't remember hearing a drill and the patient wasn't even screaming! :pac:

As you can imagine after not having visited a dentist for 12 years I needed to get a few things done because of my foolish gaps between visits:

Visit One - Due to the growth of one of my wisdom teeth I needed to get a molar tooth taken out, there was simply no way of saving it. There was no pain and I was out in a jiffy. One or two x-rays were taken.

Visit Two - Because of the way my (and I guess most people's) wisom teeth grow I needed to get both of them on the left side of my mouth filled. This did take a little while but I can say with honesty that I didn't feel a thing. I didn't even feel (or see) the injections to numb the area. Again one or two x-rays were taken.

Visit Three - He gave my teeth a clean before anything else. I'll admit this was a little unpleasant because my gums were a little inflamed but that was my own fault for not having looked after them properly. After that was done he started to fill three teeth towards the front of my mouth. Again I felt nothing and I was surprised how quickly he was done.

Visit Four (The last one... hurray!) - He said he was going to clean them again and I was a little nervous.....BUT..... the inflamation had gone down and it wasn't even a little bit sore. He started to fill the other two wisdom teeth on the right side of my mouth. For some reason the bottom one I felt a little bit but this was solved with some more injections. After he was done filling them I had a quick polish and I was on my way.

So all in all it wasn't scary and with two weeks in between visits I wasn't dreading going. It wasn't even so expensive to get it done. Whenever anyone asks me to recommend a dentist this chap will be it. I hope that helps OP and reassures you a little.

Before you undertake any dentstry abroad ask the company who their indemnity is with.? The good dentists will tell you. The cow boys will not. I found out to my cost.

If you're worried about the practitioner's insurance you shouldn't be dealing with him in the first place. When was the last time you asked a doctor/taxi driver/plumber for his insurance?

What has this to do with recommending a dentist in Dublin central?

    Hi Solas

I read your other comments about this on the Consumer Issues forum. You have a good point to make which may help a lot of people. I suggest you start a new thread on the topic so people will be less inclined to eat your head off.

Thank you for that comment. Getting my head chewed off as you put it was totally unexpected. I was attempting to save someone the experience I had as well as seeking help for myself.
    Kind regards
