High Gloss Nightmare

    Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me. I had a Red high gloss kitchen installed less than 2 years ago and I recently noticed that it has faded quite dramatically. I thought it was how the light shone on the cupboards that caused them to look different shades, but have subsequently discovered this problem. I want to go back to the kitchen suppliers but want to have some information regarding high gloss as a back up. Should this happen? it was never suggested to us that it would.

    thanks

Is it the shine that has faded or the red itself or both?
Many tones of red and the processes used to make them mean that they are not "lightfast"... if you have strong sunlight coming in a window and hitting your units, this may be your problem. I'm not sure if artificial light would be enough to cause it.

If this isn't what's causing it, could it be some of the cleaners you use maybe?

It may just be a faulty batch, or perhaps the finishing porcess wasn't performed correctly. If it's neither light nor your cleaning products then go back to where you bought it...even if it is either of those things, go back and see what's said....especially if it's the glossiness that is fading...that should never happen, even if the colour fades, and would indicate an incorrect use of the finishing paint/laquer...

I could be wrong but I think that a majority of the high gloss panels are actually a PVC overlay that is shrunk and bonded to the MDF, red does fade though.
We have the high gloss cream colour panels from the panelling centre and have had no problems but then what can happen to cream?

You could be right on the high gloss being a heat shrunk laminate...I'm not too sure on the processes involved in making these units. If that's the case then it's definitely a problem with the sub-layer and the red used to create it.
2 years is a ridiculously short time for a red colour to last...even on something like a car, fading doesn't usually start until after 5 or more years...and a car would be subject to much more sunlight than your average kitchen unit...
