Firstly - no 'Don't do it', 'what if you split up with your wife', etc.. responses - that's not what I'm looking for here.

What I am looking for is some first hand reports from people who've had the procedure done, where it was done, whether you were happy with the service and lastly how much the procedure cost. Dublin/Kildare area.

Am mid thirties, married with 3 young kids and don't want any more (neither of us do). We've discussed this for a while now and have decided to have the snip - well I decided it months ago but just haven't bothered doing anything about it.

I know our GP would refer me to some clinics but a referral from a gp will tell me sod all about how good the service from them actually is which is why I'm basically looking for recommendations.

The guy that's been around the longest is Dr Rynne . He's been mentioned on boards.ie before and is in Clane. Price is €650 under local anasthetic. I saw a video of the procedure at some point and actually didn't look too bad!

There are plenty of threads on boards, but most of them degenerate into "no way would I" in about 3 posts. By the way, I know there's no medical advice allowed but I would say one thing - care is needed post-op. It takes a good long while for all the sperm to clear out. If I was doing it myself (which I would if I was ever involved) I'd buy a cheap microscope. Hell, I might do that anyway, just for the kicks; I've seen my blood before, the other stuff would be rather cool to see :)

Edit: I would not trust myself with the microscope! Formal analysis is the way to go. More for fun!

Oh, and as an aside, VHI don't cover it. Huh. I wonder why I keep paying those guys.

Would recommend the above doctor was there last august 15 minute job not painful just take it easy for a couple of days after, as you will be tender. At 18 and 20 weeks you will need a sperm count but the doctor provides all the details and collection equipment for this. Once you are sure you want it just call the surgery no need for a GP referal it gives you great peace of mind after 20 weeks just be careful until then.

Do they just clip the tubes that go from the testis?

Does the semen change consistancy or is it even noticeable?

takes about 30 mins, no pain.

some sutures, which take a few days to disolve.

no problems afterwards. Consistency is the same.

You need condom for first 20 or so 'shots'. either play yourself or work with other half. You need two tests thereafter to show NIL sperm.

After that, you're riding freely, whenever you want with no fears of 'accidents'

obviously this means accidents of the baby variety. STD's are a different matter altogether

    Think twice, cut once
Original saying is "measure twice cut once".

Had it done over four years ago and one side OK, the other was a different story all together. When you think about it it is really two procedures not one.

To manage the pain I had to wear two pairs of tight pants for support. Take a hot bath every day, dont know why but it helps, avoid any unnecessary activity. I am not joking here "Unnessary activity" includes climbing stairs, being in a hurry or long drives.

After things settled it does help to avoid all those fiddly things but all in all, not my best decision.
