Has anyone bought an engagement ring in NYC. If so, i was wondering if someone could give me a list of jewelers etc.

    Much Appreciated.

I went 5 years ago but didn't find anything 'nice' as the fashion at the time seems to have been for very big, flashy rings. I think 47th street is the diamond capital of NYC. Take a look at this link for some hepl.

BTW, it is very, very important that you know all about diamonds before shopping here. Learn the different grades, clarity and colour or you may end up buying something that the seller wants you to buy rather than it being what you need.

Also we were told by locals to buy in New Jersey instead due to there being less sales tax but we never followed it up.

Hi Twilo, we went to NYC with the sole purpose of buying a ring last year. I had done my research and was literally dreaming facts about diamonds before i went. The diamond district was the one place we were heading for. It is dark and dingy at best and god forbid you might look in a window, you will be almost pulled in the doors. One shop we looked in; we were almost barricaded into. They would not let us leave without buying the ring. Only for my OH, we would never have gotten out.

However, we did find one great place, Roman Malokov it is about 4 doors from 5th Ave on 47th st. The people in here couldn't have been more helpful, but beware, they are serious dealers. A word of warning, if you do not know your stuff you will more than likely pay over the odds for a substandard diamond. The key to all this is study, study, study and for god sake get a certificate for the diamond.

Yeah i heard the diamond distric can be a bit dodgy. If u dont mind me asking but what did u pay for the ring or are they reasonably priced etc?

Just to say that as Shoes&Frocks said, my experience on that street was far from good. The place looks very seedy and will have a lot of people standing by the doorways to coax you inside. As long as you are aware it should be fine but best to be aware.

That year we happened to be in London, Paris and NY but in the end found the perfect ring in Clonmel :)

Don't do what I did - go into the first shop, view (I took my time), pay a super "discounted" price - come home and have it valued - and find I was duped!
Herself was happy, I was happy......

I will be calling in there again shortly to waste an hour of my time and more importantly their time and then walk out making sure whoever is serving me can't make a sale for the hour, that will give me satisfaction!!

We paid a little over 5k but had it valued back here for over 3 times that. Definately worth it but please beware of the 'hacks'!

I did lose sleep over the whole situation as even though i knew what i was at (at least i thought i did) it is a scary experience and a lot of money to invest in something that you wouldn't be fully sure of unless you are a gemologist.

Once the deal was done, we did not let the diamond out of our sight as it is a well known thing that they can take it in the back to package it and will swap it for a lesser quality diamond. It doesn't matter how reputable the place seems.

DeBeers , fifth avenue . Wide choice , all budgets catered for .
We paid $2000 for a nice 0.56 round solitaire , platinum mount .
    Highly recommended .
