Firefox: Problem typing web address into address bar. Takes ages!

In the last week, when I go to type an address into the Firefox address bar, it is taking about 30 seconds to do so.

I type www.boa, for example, and I can't type rds.ie until it has absorbed the first half of the addess.

As soon as I start tying, the CPU usage green light starts to flicker frantically, so some sort of increase in processor usage is occurring and slowing things down. But what?

There are no problems typing an address into Internet Explorer, but I hate using it.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

Firefox uses what it calls "smart search" in the url bar. It basically allows you to access you history without having to specifically type in the url you're looking for.

So for example, if I've looked at the Computers & Technology forum (url: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=9), if I want to go back there, I don't need to find that url again, all I need to do is type in "Computers" into the address bar, and I will be given a list of all sites I've visted where the page title or the url contained the word "computers".

I didn't like it at first, but now I do, it's very powerful. However, it does cause performance issues when it has a long browser history to trawl through and you can be waiting forever while it tries to bring up a list of matching urls.

There are a number of things you can do:

    1. Disable It
    2. Clear your browsing history (though this is only a temporary fix)
    3. Reduce the size of your history - go to Tools > Options > Privacy and change the length of time that firefox remembers back to. I would be surprised if many people need more than 60 or even 30 days history.

    OK.

    Still acting up.

I've cleared my browser history. But, now evening scrolling down a Firefox page is a problem.

With everything I do in Firefox - including writing this reply - after the first one or two letters it pauses for thought. Then I can proceed with the rest of the task.

If I load a window and drag on the scroll bar nothing happens at first except that the green light (CPU) flashes furiously. Then the page jumps down to where I have scrolled to and, after that, I can continue scrolling without a problem.

    But, it's driving me nuts.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.
