    Brilliant.
But I can't understand why it has not been done forever - when I was in school we had a "Joe Daly cycle training course" of some sort, with the same sort of thing - signs in the schoolyard, even giving the bike a once-over for things like brakes etc. I even got a little trophy for 'passing', which at age 6 or whatever is brilliant!
Fingers crossed it'll work this time around too.

This is great, exactly what is needed. Well done to whomever got this going. Even if the kids don't go on to cycle regularly, at least when they become drivers they might have more of an inkling of how to act around cyclists.

    That's good, it'll be safer in about 15 years:eek:

I did something like this out in my primary school in Swords. Was run by Fingal county council and we got badges at the end. The school yard even had painted on roads and roundabouts for it. Loads and loads of fun.

    This is a good idea.

When I were a lad I was sent out the door on a Raleigh Chopper. No helmet, mainly cycling on the footpad. Obeying traffic lights, optional.

I even had to teach myself how to wheelie.

This is most refreshing after Tuesday's story about English schooltards.

I heard that the Green Schools programme which promotes getting to school by bike or on foot as one of the 'flags' was recommended for cutting by An Bord Snip yesterday, so expect to see less support for these initiatives.

Didn't see any snips for the road building programme, funnily enough.

    That sucks.

    Purely selfishly, that rocks.

There was an official programme run in primary schools during the 80's. You'd get to do the course with a teacher after school with an independent inspector from the RSA equivalent passing people, even had regional and national finals.

Believe it or not I won the national safe cycling title in 1987!

There was a cycle safety school in Clontarf in my youth.
A friend of mine 'starred' in their cycle safety video called Mackers Mistake which has been a source of endless amusement over the years.
More recently another friend made a Mackers Mistake Redux with added flames, a Kenny Loggins soundtrack and some tastfeully spliced gay porn.
