Do NTSC games require me to have an HDTV?

Hey lads. I've been told that I'd need to have an HDTV if I wanted to play NTSC games. Is this true? Because I don't have an HDTV.

your tv would need to be ntsc compatible,
    most new tv's are
have you the tv's manual ?
i'd say most tv's from last 10 years would be ok

Absolutely not, once your NTSC-compatible TV has all the connections to connect up your American (NTSC) games console or DVD player then you can play it no problem. Almost all new HD TVs are NTSC compatible though.

I checked the manual and it says that I can connect NTSC supported equipment through the SCART and I'm running my PS3 through the SCART.

I had a look through my display settings of my PS3 and found in the resolutions section (Standard (PAL) and 576p) but when I enabled 576p, the screen went blank so I'm not sure :(

The reason why I'm asking is because I want to buy Blazblue so I asked the seller and he said that it would work on a PAL PS3, as long as "youbare" playing on an HDTV.

Oh right, it sounds like you have a PAL PlayStation 3 and you are playing it on a PAL TV and you want to play an NTSC game. (Tell me if I'm wrong)

Now, although the PlayStation 3 is supposed to play both PAL and NTSC games, PAL PS3's sometimes have difficulty playing the latter.

Don't bother changing the resolution on your TV, this has nothing to do with it. The settings on your PS3 should be auto-fixed for the new software. If you are getting a blank screen or some other error, go back to your man in the shop and tell him this, it might be a problem with the game itself, or that particular game might be one of the many pieces of software that have difficulty with the cross-version compatibility.

SONY say that all NTSC games with the code "BLU-US" on the spine of the games case are not playable on the PAL PlayStation 3. Check this out too.

Also, it is worth noting, any display issues you have with NTSC games CAN sometimes be resolved by hooking up to HDMI.

Hopefully you can sort it out...

You mean there is something wrong with my PS3? This setting is in my PS3 settings, I didn't change my TV settings.

And this happens in the main menu, not in a game.

It's going to depend on what TV you have. Some cheap models like bush etc. don't support NTSC. If you have a Sony or Philips it more than likely supports NTSC. You should be able to change your PS3 display to NTSC in the options to check it out.

The other fix is that you can use an RGB scart cable if your tv supports RGB scart. Usually only the AV1 channel is wired for RGB. It's an international standard so supports both PAL and NTSC. If you have a SD tv and aren't using RGB scart then sort yourself out! It will give vastly improved visuals.

    also..after heavily investing in a ps3
you really need to do it justice and invest in a hdtv, any size, you can get for very handy money these days,
    scart and ps3 makes ps3 a dull boy !

This happens in the PlayStation main menu? Jaysis, in that case get yourself a new TV, HDMI ready, cheap one around, and also your PS3 will be so much more appreciated. This will solve your problems.

If you are playing standard NTSC do you not have to pick 480 i/p?

where is this NTSC setting? I can only see Standard (PAL) and 576p. I've checked in the manual and apparently, they're the same. I think its probably my TV is just crappy but it isn't mine (my dad's) and he said he's happy with it so :S. I'm not pushed about it being HD or not, I just want to know if Blazblue will work.

You don't need to switch the PS3 to NTSC, it will do so automatically when you play an NTSC game. I have an NTSC PS1 game downloaded from the US PSN and the TV adjusts automatically. The reason the screen goes blank when you select 576p is because almost all European CRT TVs don't support it. If your TV doesn't support NTSC, when you play the game it will be in black and white.

Exactly...which is why he needs to get a delicious new HDTV. :D

They're not the same thing. By standard PAL they mean 576i. 576p is EDTV which was never widespread in Europe. Leave the PS3 on 576i and it should work fine if your TV supports NTSC.

If you can afford it, definitely! Here's one from the bargain alerts forum:

    Panasonic 32" LCD for €427

There's nothing like playing MGS4 in 1080p! (Though that TV is only 720p)

Actually you selected 576 p which will only work on a HDTV. 576i is the SD resolution.

You really need to sort yourself out with a scart cable, it really does improve the visuals even on a SD TV. You'll at least be able to read text.

If you are desperate to know if your TV supports NTSC you can PM me and I can sort you out with a japanese PSN game that you could try.

Ah yes, that would be lovely, if I could get broadband too :( Eircom don't think my connection is up to it even though a neighbour of mine who lives 200 meters away from me has a proper download speed >:(

I've decided not to risk it. I may get it in case it becomes rare later and then play it when I can afford to get an HDTV.

If your TV does support NTSC then it should work. Try downloading a demo from the US PSN and see if that works.

Agree with the others, 576p is not likely to work. For starters 576p (and 480p) won't work over a scart cable anyway. Also the number of non-HD TVs that support 576p is quite limited, there are many PAL SDTVs which will support 480p (but again not over scart) but relatively few will support 576p.

If you're using a scart cable you'll need to stick with 576i, or maybe 480i would have better compatibility with NTSC games.

if price is a factor consider a monitor
full hd monitors are very cheap 23inch 150 +vat, and get a really cheap set of speakers...perfect for a start
imo its pointless try to play a ps3 on your current equipment, no offence

Yeah but TV is rubbish on a monitor though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 836 ✭✭✭Leprekaun

Yeah, I've been considering buying a monitor anyway as I'd like to be able to play whenever rather having to wait till everyone goes to bed.

I'll definitely look into that. Cheers :)

Just wondering though, would I be able to connect my PS3 regularly as I would with a TV? I know I'd need the HDMI cable but how can it work independantly without a PC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,014 ✭✭✭WhiskeyGoblin

No man . You dont need a HDTV most of my games are NTSC and the work fine
