Is there anywhere in Dublin I could get a desolder pump (solder sucker) for under the €15 Maplin are looking for one ? Radionics' cheapest one is about €18. I didn't think these things could be so expensive

Thanks in advance for any help

Try Peats or Farnell, but to be honest €15 doesn't sound that bad for a fairly rare tool.

Cheers. Didn't know it was a rare tool
Does Peats on Parnell St still stock tools ? Ever since it moved years and years ago I thought they'd moved away from tools and supplies and into televisions and stuff.

Maplin's customer desk thingy is gone too

Hmm, Farnell have a "mini pump"

Looks like it'd do the trick. Delivery seems to be €7.50 though for orders under 35quid. Have they some kind of collection service do you know?

8.25 in Peats give them a ring and ask if it's in stock.
I just got a switch there and they have a fairly big store room, chances are they have the pump as well

Ah , that's Farnell out the window. They're in Leeds :p
Minimum credit card order is €35 and no mention of Laser. I'm heading in to town anyway so I'll swing by peats. Thanks again.

I didn't know they still had that side of the business, do they have a retail outlet?

I have an identical pump to that one that i bought there about 15 years ago and it still works 100%!

This Farnell crowd is a bit weird. I had an email correspondence with someone there this morning. Apparently the €35 min credt card limit shouldn't be there on the site, nor should the €7.50 delivery charge and they accept Laser payment...

So Kelly took the order via email and rang me for Laser details for payment.
Only problem now is I can't see the transaction on my internet bank so it's not been put through and she said on the phone she'd send me on a confirmation email and that it'd be despatched today. But nothing as of yet

    Weird day

Are you sure it was farnell??

They've had that €35 minimum limit for years + delivery charge... they used to be quite snotty if you wanted to order something small from them...

Yep they do (The main Parnell Street branch only), but you wont really get any obscure electronic bits and bobs anymore unless they order it for you - even though they still ahve a huge catalogue.

Last time I was in there, they only had about a fifth of the items I was looking for for a project - not even any Thyristors in stock :(

BTW - same thing, I have the same solder sucker for donkeys myself, and still works!

Yep, it was this crowd : http://ie.farnell.com/
I had a read through threads here and they closed their Irish operations this year and are working out of Leeds in England now. This Kelly person seems quite nice about it all. Free delivery from UPS apparently. I'll report back with my findings.

Can I ask a soldering question here ? Which do ye prefer ? The desoldering braid or the pump/sucker ? I'm soldering pickup wires onto a switch and to potentiometers . This kinda stuff :

Yeah I'm sitting here all day twiddling my thumbs and no one told me I got a package.

So yeah , to confirm.... Farnell seem to have free next delivery and accept Laser.
However the invoice reads "Farnell will no longer carry the above item once stocks run out . Please contact sales for possible alternatives." So maybe it's only on certain items

For larger stuff like pots / switches a de-soldering pump works well enough, you might even get away without it altogether... Just melt the solder, pull out old wire, push in new one, apply more new solder..

For smaller stuff like PCBs etc solder wick works well, once you get used to it...

Very senior and respected colleague in my first job (couple of decades ago) when offered the use of a solder pump,

"How dare you! What kind of an animal do you think I am."

I haven't dared use one since, (and haven't found the need for one either).
