Hey, so I'm just getting into Linux, using Mint Linux and I like it... I wanted to play some AVI files today, so i downloaded VLC and ran it, and while it worked it was slow & choppy in places... I viewed the exact same files in VLC through windows (i dual boot) and they worked perfectly...

Is there a different program to use to watch videos that's as good as VLC is in Windows??

    Cheers.

gmplayer is probably what you're after.

edit: If vlc was crap in linux but not windows on the same file then you should probably check your video drivers too.

Indeed, I prefer it to VLC, mainly for the sheer amount of tweaking you can do with Mplayer on the command line, plus its tie in with MEncoder.

MPlayer is the only video player I ever use on Linux. VLC is probably the second best out there though imo.
