Cant read files on iPod Nano with XP

My girlfriend has an iPod Nano (4th gen) and had a Mac to transfer files on with iTunes. The Mac is now gone and she has a laptop with XP and iTunes. She was able to access music through with iTunes but had to uninstall/reinstall and now cant access the music. It asks to format because it aint a Mac. Any ideas on how to…
