No offers for existing Sky customers?

I've recently become a sky+ subscriber, got a decent install offer etc.

My mother asked me to have a look at her sky box (grundig sky digital box about 11 years old) the signal is really badly scrambled and it looks like the whole lot needs to be replaced to be honest.

So I suggested she ring sky and see is there any way she can get sky+ for a reasonable price, but they were having none of it, and asked for over €100 for the equipment. Even as a customer for so long, isn't there any offers for existing customers to upgrade to get the benfits of the new equipment?

Without paying that much to upgrade? Or has this always been the way?

    Thanks.

It has always been this way, sky look after new customers and not existing customers whom are loyal....

Their justification is that you got a free box when u signed up etc and wont again...unless u treaten them u might be lucky...only desent over other than that is a Hd upgrade which is approx 99 including install...but ur bill would go up a further 15 a month and u would need a hd ready set to avail of it fully...

Yeah, she threatened to cancel her subscription and they just said well you will just have to cancel then.

If she cancels, and signs up again will she be a new customer or..? At the moment she can't watch anything and they won't fix anything for her, and the cost of an upgrade is just as expensive, so it's a little difficult.

Any time I've called them they've been very good.

She as her self cannot sign up again, and signing up as a new customer with a different name is classed as fraud and may flash up on their systems, I have seen this happen on numerious occassions.

You will have to give a minimum of 30days notice to cancel. Other options would be to try and source a second hand sky box...lots of them around ...for small amounts of money...try the sister site of or ebay http://www.ebay.ie

You should take into consideration of the cost of producing a Sky box...it isnt cheap and unfortunetly if sky were to give a free one to every1 then they wouldnt be in business...

11 yrs is a long time for anything to last...most products have a shelf life of 3 to 5 yrs....so shes done quite well..If a dvd player fails after 5 yrs people dont ring up the manufacturer and demand a free new one..

The grundig boxes can also be repaired....but in my opinion their extremely slow at channel changing and so an upgrade is a neccessity..

But thats just my opinion...Im sure others will disagree with me

I had a simlar experience with Sky except my box went altogether and i rang them twice within a couple of days and was told a new box would cost €120.00 and even when i said i would cancel they didn't care, this was about 2years ago and i was with them for 7yrs. I cancelled the service altogether and still haven't gone back.

You should have a look on Adverts.ie and see if someone who might have upgraded to SKy+ is looking to sell an old box on the cheap.

While I appreciate your reply, I had a feeling someone would take issue with the tone of the post.

    Let me explain:

She wasn't 'demanding' an upgrade. I think a customer that's been with them so long should at least get some sort of discount on new equipment, she's paid for it over and over again since she originally signed up - regardless of the cost to manufacture the boxes.

Thanks for the other replies - it's the dish as well I think that needs replacing. I'm going to call in to her tomorrow and get her to ring them and pass the phone over to me, I will have a chat with them about these charges, see if I can get a better price.

You should take a look at other options in your mothers area such as chorus etc and price up the same package your mother is currently on with sky. Then make a call to sky enquiring who you need to speak to about canceling the sub. They will transfer you to someone who will offer you a deal to stay.

I did this two weeks ago for the mother in law and got her a sky plus box and install (new lnb and cable run) to replace her old digibox. Cost €49 and install was carried out within 5 days too!

She is on the top package with sports, whether this makes a diff i'm not sure. I'd say it's worth making a few calls regardless as either way you should be able to get new equipment and maybe save a few quid too.

    o/s

Thanks - this is what I plan on tomorrow. I'm just pricing local and competitor offers at the moment so I'll have something to arm myself with before calling.
