Haven't heard anything after the mail confirming it was going ahead. Are you looking for an excuse to stop training? ;)

lol, what clarification are you looking for? When and where to turn up and how far to run is probably all I need and I know that already. However, I might be out of this race. It's unlikely I'll be able to run again until mid August :-(

Is that mean you will run the 100 to catch up on the mileage ?:D

Mid August is perfect, race is the 15th! So you have a slightly longer than normal taper, not a bad thing given the busy year you've had.

How's the nose? Have you written a race report yet? I'm intrigued as to what happened.

So hows the training going for ye at this stage?
    I`m exhausted already...:(
And food! What are ye gonna eat?
I tried a snickers on one run a few weeks back and I woudn`t be doing that again..yuk...
Bananas and energy gels are gonna be awful after a while,
I hear of people drinking slimfast and suchlike?!?!
    Jam sandwiches?
    Flapjacks?
    Chocolate?
    Nuts?
    Pizza?

    :o

slimfast is good if you can handle dairy.
Muller rice is heaven when you need a sweet treat.
    Pringles
    chicken soup
    ham sandwiches
    .....
I find that so long as I have a variety (of mainly savoury) snacks I'm usually ok. Sticking to one thing is what makes me ill.

Agree completely on the muller rice. Porridge is great, cold boiled spuds with a nice bit of salt, crisps, soup, jellys, tinned spaghetti, kellogs 11s bars. I could go on but as you see its less of a race and more of a mobile buffet really. Vital that you try stuff in training though.

Not the type of food recommended for normal running. Curious as to why?

Is it that you lose appetite totally when running for so long and so any type of food that you can eat which your stomach can tolerate is regarded as OK?

Or are high fat, high salt snacks that normally would be avoided as junk food particularly suitable for ultra-running because of the unique physiological demands of the sport?

Once you've run 30 miles or so you don't really care what the nutritional benefits of the food are, fuel is fuel. A lot of these foods could be taken on shorter runs but they're just not needed.

    Folks,
I was trawling the 'net this afternoon looking for some inspiration for this race as I've never done a 100 miler before and came accross the following 'motherlode' of 100 mile race reports http://www.run100s.com/reports/index.htm.

They're nearly all US based and mostly for trail races, but there appear to be some real gems in there,

    Mick.

How many competitors would be taking part in this ?
What do they mean when they say u need your own support team ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

Don't know how many people are taking part. Having your own support usually means having at least one (better 2 on a long single loop course like Connemara) that follow you on a bike/car and take care of you. Often they have to stay still to feed you and then move on a bit for the first while but can pace/feed you while moving later in the race. I don't know the exact regulations for this event yet but you will certainly need people to commit to helping you for the entire time.

    I found this link too..

    http://www.lehigh.edu/~dmd1/keri.html

Lately when I`m out on my long runs then I kinda ask myself what I`d like right then and see what kinda cravings I get...Very scientific!
So what being popping into my head is stuff like..
Stirfried rice/risotto, Biscuits, thickly buttered Fruit Brack, Apples, Nuts, Chicken noodle soup, steak, Hula Hoops, Bounty Bars.
I don`t really wanna eat complete rubbish but I aint gonna be caring about the calorie content and if I`m gonna be running 100 miles (oh God) I don`t care if a mars bar or 2 is goin to my hips..:P:P

Word on the street has it that Magnet ran her third marathon race in five days over the weekend - just as a training exercise !!!

Take a bow Mighty Magnet !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 472 ✭✭Magnet

Well there goes my competitive edge...

I was refining my crew`s skills!! And my manners while running!?!?
My friend had a basket on her bike which was very useful but I can`t see any of my male crew cycling that. :p
And practicing pacing, which completely went out the window!!

Well on a lighter note..only about 300 training miles and I`m done :D

The great unknown beckons- well, for me anyway in this upcoming race. Really looking forward to it, but also apprehensive about having to use a crew and about how i will feel during the run (damn shinsplints etc.). Connemara '09 was my first ultra and this will be my forth and longest by some 60km.
At this stage does anybody know how many people are signed up to start?
