right lads im gonna pay my vrt in the next few weeks and have a question..who or how do they actually decides what your classic is worth, would it be a good time to pay it now as all values have dropped?should you bring it to the office looking as if it hasx been pulled backwards through a ditch or would that matter and can you bring some adverts of similar cars to argue what the current value is if taxman thinks its worth more than it is..bit worried as i cant really get a guide on the vrt calculator on the webite, they say if its not listed than its a standard 36% but is that 36 percent of a lot or of a little in the current climbs...car is 1988 vw mk1 gti cabriolet in case any one is wondering....thanks

AFAIK you'll have to pay the min fee of €780 anyhow.

I think that if you ring Rosslare (and get an answer...) they should be able to quote you a cost. They seem to be the best informed. With any luck you should be able to quote them when you go elsewhere. I don't think that having a dirty car will make any difference. In my experience, the staff either know nothing whatsoever about classic cars and stick with great determination to the middle value (they can quote three values, low, medium or high, depending on condition) or else they're copped on and will know better.

The bare minimum is €720 with no emissions cert. That's 36% of the minimum value €2000. Put me off bringing anything younger than 30 years old*

As to value, they just think of a number. Tried the VRT calculator on the ROS.ie website?

    OMSP €7112 = VRT €2275  (CO2 197g / 32%)

*with the exception of a Reliant three-wheeler as they are VRT'd as motorcycles. :P

    Sorry, €720.

Where are you getting the OMSP of €7k on an '88 GTI?

And where is the OP getting MKI for an '88 Golf?

The convertible jumped from MK1 to Mk3 in 1993

Using the lousy drop-down options available on the ROS website. YMMV.

I don't think it's that high, but the system says...

Best phone up a few times and ask different folk. Get a stat code for it.

In my experience, the real value of the car and the value the VRO put on it are two totally unrelated matters... They tend to either heavily over value the car, or heavily under value it... Fingers crossed.

+1. (They also mis-classify them). Then you have to stump up the money and appeal to get some back.

im afraid yer gonna get robbed by the revenue

no matter what ya do !!!!

if you bought the car for 1 euro , they will still charge you the minimum
    720 yo,yos:(

how they can get away with it i dont know ?

single european market me a**e !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,598 ✭✭✭chiefwiggum

jesus i'd have no problem paying 720 squid at all but as 2 cv says fingers crossed as there is no way of telling if its gonna be double that or even treble..thats what pisses me off and leaves me thinkin of buying a 30+ car and leaving this one in a garage till it hits 30

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 959 ✭✭✭manta mad

another point to take heed of !!!!!!

every now and again the revenue will red flag a certain make of car .

this means that your make of car will be on the ROL site & then all of a sudden its gone down off it & it comes up as a specail make , & in the vrt office they will say
holds on we have to refer your car to rosslare !

which means you will have to pay MORE

    EXAMPLE
opel manta gte was on the site & i got it done for 560 euro .
( yes 560 euros ) thats a year ago now.

now this is what comes up

Not established - highest VRT rate applied

    OPEN MARKET SELLING PRICE: €2000
    RATE OF TAX: 36%
    VEHICLE REGISTRATION TAX:
    (payable on enquiry date) €720

so in lay mans terms were been SCREWED

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,598 ✭✭✭chiefwiggum

its head wrecking isn't it? theres no consistancy to it..so you think ringing roslare might br the best bet ..got a number for them?...rang the local office and it was ...sure bring it in and we'll have a look...nope not showing on the system....sure what value have you on your car sir?...like come on its a bit amatuer to say the least.i could bring it in one office and they could for example say 1000 squid and bring it too the next one and they say 125o???????????

Calm down dear. It's just the rule changes. I agree it's a total humping

Pre July 2008. It there was three percentage bands (something like 22.5% - 30% OMSP). The minimum VRT applied was €315

Post July 2008. There's something like 6/7 bands ranging from 13.5% to 36%. Based on emissions. No proof of emissions (pretty much anything over 10 years old) and it's top rate 36%. There is no minimum VRT applied now, but there is a minimum value to anything of €2000

I don't think it's been "flagged up" as you suggest, but I do think that these two registrations were done either side of the 1st July 2008.

Give us the dates they were done....

There's also the small matter of VRT being illegal.. Ireland has already been told off by the european commission, but they continue to defy them.

I agree here... The irish complain, and then give in :D
If this were France, the whole country would be on strike (well basically any excuse will do in France to go on strike, this would just be a REALLY good one)
