Leg Weights

I'm looking for a pair of unobtrusive 1kg or so leg weights to help me speed up my kicks. I have an old set like this but I find they chafe a lot even if I tighten them and wearing bandages under them is uncomfortable.

Any recommendations are much appreciated, even alternative training methods.

Plyometrics help me but the weights didn't they made me feel like the kicks were faster and they really weren't.

I use a kwon resistance band it straps around my ankle and i connect it to a 40kg weight on the ground. Then to make it harder i pull the weight further and further away from my ankle or the bag if I am kicking that. the furhter it is away the harder the resistance

    Does that work well?

Plyometric training and resistance training is the way if you want speed - there is a load of stuff on youtube on the latter.

    Weights won't make you faster.

yep. I normally do a few rounds on each leg then finish training with a round with no resistance and the differnece is very noticable.

When i did it, It only felt like my kicks were faster. The plyometrics actually make your legs mor explosive and powerful.

Isn't kicking with weights on a good way of wrecking your joints?

I didnt realise this was a plyometrics v resistance competition! i do both. But as with everything in martial arts different things work well for different people.

As for wrecking your joints, there is no weight on your legs, it's an elastic providing resistance when you kick, just like sparring with heavy gloves so when you fight with 10oz gloves your hands move faster.

Best of luck with your training OP.

Yeah, I'd got the idea of teh resistance band, which seems like a much better way of doing it.

Our instructor was asked about leg weights in class and he said that he used to do it but it was chronic for his knees so he strongly advised against it. I hadn't heard of using a resistance band before but it makes a lot more sense.

Be very careful with leg weights as I wrecked my legs with them doing stupid drills when I should have been perfecting my technique
