Kicks off tomorrow. How many medals, if any? How many top 8's?

A good squad who will have aspirations right now to be qualifiers for London '12.
The Irish Team for the U23 European Track and Field Championships will be in action on the track tomorrow in Lithuania. There are many potential medallists within the talented squad including David McCarty, 5000m (West Waterford AC) and multi-talented Kelly Proper, Long Jump (Ferrybank AC).

David McCarthy is the fastest of the 5000m entrants with his 13:42.11 from Walnut, California. Turkey’s Selim Bayrak who has a best of 13:26.14 from 2008 but his current seasonal best is 13:55.61 will also be in contention. SPAR European Cross Country U23 champion Andrea Lalli of Italy, Spain’s European junior silver medallist Mohamed Elbendir and the Ukraine’s Maksym Kryvonis will all be looking for medals.

Kelly Proper will need to jump a new Irish record to make the podium at these Championships with the top five 6.60m-plus jumpers in Europe all entered. The 2006 World Junior silver Anika Leipold from Germany leads the lists with 6.67m, closely followed by Nastassia Mironchyk of Belarus and Russia’s Yekaterina Malysheva both on 6.65m. Proper has however displayed that she has championship temperament setting a new Irish Record of 6.59m to qualify for the final at the Senior European Indoor Championships in Turin in March this year.

Double Paralympic Gold Medalist, Jason Smyth of City of Derry AC, will be aiming for a place in the final following his record breaking run in 100m of 10.42 when winning the U23 national title in Tullamore. Brian Gregan (Tallaght AC) will compete in the 400m and can make the final following his performance of 46.85 in Belgium last month.

There will also be a strong women’s 4×100m relay made up of Claire Brady (Celbridge AC), Louise Kiernan (Fingallians AC), Amy Foster (North Down AC) and Kelly Proper AC. All four athletes had achieved the individual qualifying standard for the 100m.

    Live results.

Men's 100m heats have been scratched. 3 semis later today. Smyth looks to have a great chance of advancing.

Women's 100m: Kiernan 12.01 -1.2, qualifies as fastest loser. Brady misses out by 0.01, running 12.06 -2.0. Foster off form with 12.33 -1.6.

Hamstring after 90m what an awful shame. This was his time to shine.

Gutted is an understatement there. As far as I know this hamstring never really gave any trouble, it was his groin or hip flexor a few years back that was giving him trouble and ruled him out for over a year. Now this

Kiernan 7th in the semi in 11.88.

Wilkinson out of the PV having cleared 3.50.

Jason Smyth misses out despite being 8th fastest in the semis, running 10.60 into a stiffer headwind than the other two heats.

Brill! He was 3 seconds clear of fourth. Looks like the Spaniard went for the long run and split the field.

Great news. A major step for the guy. Delighted now and he is now becoming the real deal.

    How was the race?

To be honest, I'm only following the online results so didn't see the race. Brendan O' Neill's run was a bit strange after his good SB, but congratulations to David.

It's a nice boost to Atheltics in Ireland, amid the in-fighting and back-stabbing, to see young athletes win medals of any colour on a continental and world stage.

Just looking at this now, that is serious bad luck!

Oh, and a very very good run from McCarthy. This guy has had a very long collegiate season in the US. This has been the death of many runners in the past. Excellent medal, now lets hope he keeps his head down and keeps working hard, which I'm sure he will.

Remember Robert Connolly though. Bronze behind Mo Farah in 2003? I've met David several times though and I think we will see him progress as a senior.

Dissapointed for Wilkinson. Hopefully she'll bounce back over the coming weeks to push nearer that 4.00m mark.
    Two in 5 days!!!!!
It really has been a great week. And, contrary to the last few years, it's the middle-distances in which the medals are being won rather than the sprinting and field events.

I don't see how it could be split into another thread - athlete gets injured in a championships and someone questions the injury in that championship thread. Seems like the right place to me. What an odd new thread you'd have to start to ask a question about an injury to an irish athlete. Maybe read the post again and you'll see its not critical, highly fueled or bad tempered.

You really don't see the reason?

And maybe if you read my post you'll see I wasn't accusing Irishathlete_1 himself of getting 'highly fueled', as you put it, rather that the topics that were raised have the potential to drag the thread into another bickering match like other threads, with remarkably similar stakeholders, have done in the past. (which I guess is what it's ended up as anyway and I'm facilitating right now ).

Anyway, it was just a suggestion given that some people may not want to have to wade through posts like this one and yours to see how Irish athletes performed at the championships, which I'd imagine, but not certain, is what Tingle would've set up the thread for in the first place.

    Anyway, I digress. :)

Excellent performance from McCarthy, especially considering he has had tough indoor and outdoor seasons already in the States, so he's done well to maintain enough form to come to a championships like these and snake away with a medal. Also according to athleticireland.ie he was disappointed with the bronze, good to see an Irish athlete with such high aspirations, refusing to settle for mediocrity and wanting more. There has been Irish athletes in the past who have medalled at junior and u23 level in the past and haven't really gone on to achieve anything at senior level, but based on the times he has achieved at such a relatively tender age, and his determination to succeed, I reckon he has a bright future ahead of him at international level, and I certainly hope so. Anyway, lets celebrate the present and fair play to him for his performance today, we;ll have at least one medal from these championships, would be a disaster to return with none!
The medal managed to paper over what was, otherwise, a poor display from the Irish team today. Louise Kiernan aside, nobody progressed beyond the heats, and Brendan O'Neill finished last in the 5000m. Anybody have any theories on why this was, was the team prepared properly for the championships, were the qualification standards set by the AAI too low, or did a number of people just have bad days? Don't want to be too critical, but its never nice seeing Irish athletes listed as last in first round heats, and theres no point pretending that everything is rosy in the garden either when its not.
But enough of that, well done again to McCarthy, and best of luck to the Irish team for the rest of the championships, who knows, maybe Kelly Proper might pull another big jump out of the bag!

Rose-Anne Galligan won her semi and is the fastest qualifier for the 1500m final.

Sarah Treacy was eliminated in a much slower semi.

Excellent. Interesting to see how she fares, could be an outsider, she has good base speed.

Rory Chesser 8th in his heat. 3 mins 47.30.
He would have needed 3 mins 44 to advance as a fastest loser.

Unfortunate for rory! I think he was doing well to just get to these champs. After running 3.43 that will do his steeple a world of good. Hopefully him kirwan and farrel can have a great race and hopefully a fast time at the seniors

Congratulations to Rose-anne, a nice way to pb in the heats. But she will need to bring her A game if she wants a top 5 finish and she is well capable of doing that. Great too see her making the final and im looking forward to her racing the seniors now aswel

Good qualification from Proper. 6.40m first jump. will have to jump 6.50m + to win the final

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 76 ✭✭HaileGeb

Kelly Proper qualified in the Long Jump at the first attempt. She jumped 6m 40, exceeding the requirement of 6m 35. Nice to see her get the job done at the first attempt. She will hopefully be a contender for a medal now.
The leading qualifier was 6m 50.

Imagne you foul the 1st round, foul the 2nd and need to jump a pretty decent distance and close what you jumped in the qualifying to make the final 8. Thats pressure and we should never have doubted her. Proper with a 6.58 with so much pressure on her gets in at 5th and now has 3 more jumps to give it a real lash.

6th it'll be. Disappointing no medal but great guts to do that on her 3rd jump when she needed it.

When it comes to womens long jumping, Europe is strong so this is very positive despite being 'only' 6th.
