Swapping Phones and keeping the same iTunes

A mate of mine lent me his iPhone 2G a while ago which I took, reformatted and made my own with the usual iTunes setup on my PC. I just gave that back to him and bought meself a nice shiny new 3GS. I was wondering what will happen when I plug it into my PC for the first time? Will my existing iTunes see it and assimilate it into a ScottyBoy phone or should I set up a nice new fresh iTunes and start from scratch?

    Thanks Muchly.
    SB

Itunes will see it and ask you do you want to set it up as a new phone and then it'll let you restore the last backup of the 2G, so you can get back any texts and settings you had on the old one.
