Gel Nails

Im planning on getting gel nails done soon and forgot to ask my beautian something. Can gel nails make your nails longer? - Ive quite short and weak nails and cant grow them very long without them snapping or breaking (ive tried all vitamins, hardeners...everything, they are just going to be like that forever I think).

I would kill to have beautiful strong long nails and hoping gel nails might help me - even if it is only temporary! Will they be just fitted over the existing nails or will they be able to put 'extensions' on them?

    Thanks a million

In my own experience they put the tips on and then glue over the rest so it looks like a full false nail.
They distroy even healthy nails though so yours are going to be in a way worse conditon afterwards, they file down your own nails a good bit first too which makes them weaker again.

    hi OP

They will put a tip on your natural nail and then apply the Gel over the tip - the tip isn't the valuable part. it's the gel fused onto your own nail that makes the strength. The tip only provides the length for you. Your own nails will grow underneath but will be dependant on the Gel for strength so if anything it will make them a bit weaker..... that's how I've found Gel or Acrylic nails to make mine anyway.... Whatever you do, don't bite or pull them off yourself, it's painful and it shreds your nails. You'll have to let Gel grow off but Acrylic can be disolved in an acetone solution in the beauticians.

If you get gel nails put on they put a liquid on that draws out the natural oils in your nails as its easier for the fake nail to take to the natural nail. This will weaken your natural nail so if you have already got weak or slightly bendy nails I dont think gel nails are the way to go. They wont make your nails grow longer, they just give the illusion that you have long nails. Plus, its advised that after every 3 fill-ins that you get done on the nails, you get the whole lot removed and start again. This keeps the lot looking fresh and for you to get a whole fake nail put back on again. All in all, it would end up being v. expensive!!
What hardeners/vitamins/nail grower are you using as it might just be a matter of finding the one that works for you.

Thats what I was afraid of (the wrecking my nails part), I was told once they are put on and taken off properly it shouldnt be too bad.

Agghh I dont know what to do now, Id love just once to have beautiful long nails..but my nails are terrible as they are (they grow really fast but not strong at all, they are bendy and break easily - blood tests showed up nothing, and everything Ive seen or recommended has had no effect) Should I chance it seeing as they couldnt get much worse...or just get used to the fact im going to have short gross nails forever?

My nails wouldnt be as weak but there not great either, I went for it , i know the feeling of just wanting nice long pretty nails and they are really nice. Its jsut afterwards it takes a while for your own nails to recover.
Id say give it a try, u can use creams and nail strenghteners afterwards if needed

Also, be prepared that if you do get them done, you'll feel like your all fingers and thumbs as you get used to having long nails!! It's hard to pick up coins and things!!

The liquid they apply to de-hydrate the nail only de-hydrates them long enough for the technician to apply the gel - it's not permanent. If the nail technician is any good then there will not be any lasting damage to your own nail. The Gel which I use is Brisa by CND and it requires very little buffing of the natural nail. You only need to remove the 'shine' from the nail. I wouldn't recommend a fresh set every three weeks either - you just need to get them 'filled' every three weeks or so. I think the whole three week replacement thing refers to what is known as the 'Everlasting Manicure' or 'Three Week Manicure' which is basically a gel overlay over your nail (not tips). They do require time and money to maintain though and while they won't damage your nails if applied and removed expertly neither will they improve your nails. Having said that, a friend of mine wore them for about two years solid and swears that hers are much easier to grow now.
My aunt took flaxseed oil capsules recently and I saw a huge improvement in her nails - maybe try them if you haven't already.
