Getting 'Dominican Rep Pesos' here in Ireland? - Help please!

    Hoping for help here.

Offspring is travelling to Dominican Republic for 4-week trip, commencing 1 August. ISV thing - 2 weeks' volunteering, and 2 weeks 'trip'.

I thought I could order Dominican Republic Pesos from the Central Bank - but I rang them and they said 'we don't do foreign currency - you'll have to try your local bank, and they might not be able to get any, either'.

Will visit 'local bank' later (phoning is a nightmare), but I'm not optimistic. Said 'local bank' looks aghast when a human being enters the premises, etc.

I know people go on holidays to the Dominican Republic - has anyone got any info re getting one's hands on some currency?

Thomas Cook on Grafton street should have defo have some. I changed Dom. pesos into euro there about two weeks ago!

Easiest option is to bring USD or euro with you and change over there.
If you change to US dollars here you'll pay conversion twice, EUR to USD
and then USD to peso. If I was going again I'd just bring euro and change there.
Don't think the main Irish banks will have the Dom Rep peso in stock.

Thanks for your quick replies. All info gratefully received.

I shouldn't be so surprised at my ignorance regarding this matter, but I am.:p

I went about two years ago and i ordered some from my local bank of ireland. It did take a few days for them to come through though.

Well - progress on this, thanks.

I phoned Thomas Cooke - left a message as required, requesting they phone me back.

They did, some hours later, but I somehow managed to cut them off before answering. Phoned again, left another message.

Was planning to go visit them in my lunchtime today, when a colleague suggested that I try 'the credit union', which is next door to our office.

The nice people in the Credit Union they say yes! They can order the pesos!
I'm very impressed - particularly as they don't even charge a commission.

I did try my own local bank - National Irish - but the very pleasant girl there didn't think that it was possible to get Dominican Republic pesos in Ireland at all.

Glad you got it sorted, I know when I was going a few years back they were pretty impossible to find here.
